Can I just throw another great value brand name into the mix.....
And it's Swiss

Re: Japanese watches, yes or no?
Boy, I hope you're right! I've always shyed away from them because of the huge money they spend on sponsorships and advertisements, figured they were over-priced...but we'll see, I've got one due in this week

Based on your signature I would suggest you take a look and the Orient Mako XL, AKA "Planet Orient." I have just ordered one of these as a birthday present to myself and will of course be posting some pics as soon as it arrives.omegaaddict wrote:I just love a lively debate.
I will have to say much of what all of you have said about buying the watch not the brand makes sense.
Whilst I will always have my preference for a solid high end swiss made brand. I think I will venture out and get myself an orange monster. Something about the orange is really appealing and the fact that it is apparently built as a tank is an added plus!

But it has some things that I will basically not stand in any watch I own:
- a mineral display as opposed to something harder or more preferably sapphire. I am afraid I am not always delicate with my watches and I always want the display window to be pristine and not scratched up.
- if i am not mistaken orient's do not have hack movements, correct? that is a bit of a pet peeve of mine, don't know why but I wouldn't like a watch not having a hack movement.
Also not sure if anyone knows this, but how many BPH does the seiko monster movement do? I notice that most japanese movements run at about 21,600 which is just not as smooth of a sweeping hand motion as the swiss movements (another pet peeve I have)

The Orient does not hack, correct, no does the original Monster (I believe the new one does). When they are in a low-ish state of wind you can hold the movement by slight reverse pressure on the crown. If you're that bothered.
You cannot handwind either of them (not sure about the new one) but they power up very easily. I wear my Mako a couple of hours daily when I go swimming and it hasn't stopped for over a month. It needs adjusting about every two weeks, but then I'm not fussed if it's a minute or so out.

The latest seiko 4R movements hack, I think the new monster has one and hacks aswell as handwinds.
If you don't like mineral crystal you wouldn't like the monster either. Companies fit mineral to save money. Not going to find too much sapphire in watches under £150.
You can get specially made saphire crystals for the monster, mako xl or many a seiko/orient aftermarket and fit them yourself or get a watchmaker to do it.
Orient also make watches over the 2k mark now as oreint royal stars and are comparable to the swiss. The also have an inhouse mechanical chronograph. Something which Rolex don't have(?)
I miss all the great things that may never be.
