Re: Inspiration and homage pic thread
A Timex dive watch will do exactly the same job underwater as a Rolex dive watch as an Omega dive watch as a CW dive watch. It tells you how much time you have been under / have left. But then the majority of divers I know run a dive computer these days and that is the primary 'tool' instrument. It's not 1977 any more.
I wear a dive watch only as a backup to my backup dive computer. I see no need to risk a $1,000 watch on a crowded dive boat where gear can so very easily, and does, get damaged in chop. But then, I am not much into status so see no need to 'show off' a Rolex Submariner when gearing up. Others may want the 'boasting rights' and there is nothing wrong with that. I just smile to myself.

But it's hard to view Rolex as a show off or status watch when they probably produce about 800,000 a year! I thought most who are interested in watches buy them because they are decent well made robust watches from a brand with history and some iconic designs and they hold their value better than most brands.
Now if they were wearing Blancpain FF they would have been showing off.

I would say an $8,000 watch is a show-off watch when compared to the normal Casios you see. Would you happily risk $8,000 being rolled over by an air tank? Yeah, there are clearly a lot of buyers (and there IS the lemming effect after all) but that's still a lot of money to most people, me included. I wouldn't spend anything like that on a watch myself, certainly not to risk it on a dive boat, but each to their own and if you've got that kind of money I guess it doesn't matter.nbg wrote:But it's hard to view Rolex as a show off or status watch when they probably produce about 800,000 a year! Sorry, but that is total rot.FloridaPhil wrote:I would say an $8,000 watch is a show-off watch when compared to the normal Casios you see. If someone wants to wear a 10grand watch for diving, DIY, gardening etc, then all they are doing is wearing a watch just as it is intended. To be used.
I take the opposite view to many on here. To me, someone who spends a fortune on a watch and then babies it, leaving it in the watch box and only removing it for "best" is totally missing the point of the watch and doing it a disservice.
(I am talking about tool watches here, not dress watches)
If you buy a diver, use the damn thing and enjoy it.
If you buy a Rolex etc purely for "dinner" then that to me is where the word poser can be levelled. Why have it otherwise.
Scooter has the right idea. Buy a sub and bloody use it.
For what it is worth my recent Bulova beater purchase has not been worn, yet this week my DeepSea has been put through gardening, car washing, hedge trimming, picture hanging and is still ticking along quite merrily. It has also been worn in the pool/sea/sauna/steamroom etc etc with no ill effects.
Oh, and it has been diving too! The wetsuit extension is the phenomenal.

As I said, each to his own. Maybe you missed that part.
I don't give a flying you-know-what what anyone else does. I'll do as I do and they can do what they want to do. Out.

Re: Inspiration and homage pic thread
Such heated argument regarding the use of dive watches and other watches as intended.
Shame the thread was meant to be one about homages and inspirations [FACE WITH STUCK-OUT TONGUE AND TIGHTLY-CLOSED EYES]

Phil I didn't say I would wear it on a dive boat - I said I wear it swimming, an activity that as you know doesn't have the same risk as being on a dive boat. I do tend to wear most of mine for what they are intended and they have less scratches on them than I see on most desk divers.FloridaPhil wrote:I would say an $8,000 watch is a show-off watch when compared to the normal Casios you see. I do agree with Nick that unless you are a non wearing collector, I can't really see the point of buying a robust outdoors watch unless you actually wear it.
Neil
PS: I do however think that nowadays it is probably a bit dangerous to wear a Reverso playing Polo......
PPS: that was a joke as I don't play Polo - or have enough money to have a horse (or a boat)!

Once upon a time I'd have waded into this debate all guns blazing. These days I think , "who cares, they're only bloody watches!"
