I really don’t worry about it at all, I buy watches to wear them, for me a scratch adds to the charm.

I have occasionally walked a glancing blow off a brick wall; just gone too close, swinging my arms just too much and "SCUFF" the damage has been done. For a while I'v had two watches in particular which I regard as "too precious (to me) to clonk" so they are worn as dress watches. Recently I've acquired an Omega Speedmaster X-33 and, like several other Omega Speedmaster Mark models have sunburst brushed cases. As yet, I almost daren't wear the X-33 outdoors. The time will come and I'll loosen up.

They are just things and stuff....eventually you will be dust and they won't matter. Wear and enjoy.

Very true and a good sentiment to just enjoy what you have.

Analysing this question a bit more, it depends also on how you view your watches:

Investment pieces - they have gone up in value, you might want to sell some day and so don't want to do any damage that would impair value and therefore you seldom wear.

You are a serial watch flipper - you keep your watches safely stored, keep all box and papers together, don't wear the watch for any "hazardous activities" such as washing the dishes. Chances are you will sell them in the short term and you don't want to erode the value.

You are a more chilled person who realises they are just objects - wear whatever you want, when you want. A few marks or scratches, so what, these give the watch character and remind you of memories/experiences wearing the watch.

Inheritance pieces - you either received a watch passed down for a loved one, bought the watch from a legacy, or one of your watches you have earmarked to pass on to a son/daughter/nephew etc - again probably take some care with these pieces.

Birthday/wedding/other present - as above, take a lot of care when wearing.

You are a normal person - it is a watch, you wear it.

The irony is that I think the most damage I've had to any of my watches has been whilst in "safe" environments, desk diving marks, banging on a door in the house. Cycling, gardening or swimming there are less obstacles to negotiate and I don't think I've ever put a mark on a watch.

That's a good analysis, Patrick.

I have two inheritance (i.e. bought with a legacy) pieces and apart from not taking them on holiday they are among my most worn.

I am somewhere between chilled and normal on your scale.

I have concluded that I am a chilled person, who wears any investment, inheritance and birthday/anniversary/event watches in a normal manner.

The proviso is that whilst I “risk” those watches in everyday wear, that “risk” doesn’t extend to putting myself or the watches in a situation that would mean I ran the risk of being parted from the watch. Reason being that whilst the watch could be replaced by the same model of watch, it would be a different watch, not the specific watch to which I became attached by reason of how I came by it in the first instance.

On my wrist as we speak.....Whilst my old Seiko Sportura Kinetic was on duty in Thailand this summer the Breitling took over on a short week in Eastern Europe. I wore it to work today and it had it's fair share of knocks and dings from my desk and a few boxes moving from my classroom. It's a thing....if it increases in value I'll be surprised.

I spotted a 2019 Rolex Batman whilst in Vienna a few weeks back and made enquiries as there was no price shown. The store (not an AD I learned) took great delight in telling me I could have it for €18000 or so as that was current market price. Nah....i'll pass lol.

Money buys things and stuff.....enjoy them whilst you can. Life is short, wear the watch!

Sold all my prissy, luxury crowd pleasers due to having a toddler and being a biker, just can't wear them without devaluing them or feeling like they can't take the punishment. Collection is alot more usable now and most days i wear a g shock or a Bremont. These days I wear the watches i enjoy and not the watches that look the coolest or are the most well regarded to a wis just ones that are fun and carefree, spending less times on watch forums allows your true nature to come through
I miss all the great things that may never be.

Why? Is your toddler a watch thief? :)

And what does being a biker matter? The watch will be tucked away under your bike jacket and glove.

He has taken a couple when im not looking and given them a chuck across the room which is not very good for automatics also I like to have good playtime with my kid so not so many luxury swiss watches look good after a bit of rough and tumble or don't get swirlies from a sand pit so a good watch has to come off incase i want to flip it later id rather not abuse it. Being a biker matters because my hands are in and out of tight spaces of the frame etc or could get marked putting on a disc lock, leather jackets, gore tex and gloves leave small marks on highly polished surfaces especially ones with poppers on the wrist or zips on the sleeve...I used to take them off and put them in a watch pouch in my pocket so again not wearing it so what's the point in having it? Especially if in worrying about it. Can you think of anything more stupid than worrying about a watch? If it hinders my enjoyment of the day it's got to go.

I just found if my watch is taking up any time via worry then it's a waste of time having it, it's a tiny stress that is not needed in daily life. Over 1k these are expensive things and in my experience they literally haemorrhage money in the short term and I got sick of babying something just so it held its value better (ideally buy to keep and thats always the idea with each purchase but that rarely works out with this obsession as many people know, some people are different)
I miss all the great things that may never be.
