help! wife actually wants a watch

Post by gwells »

but not just a ladies watch. she wants a moonphase. and as we started looking, she google image searched moonphase watch and started looking at pictures. and found this, decided it's what she wanted.

Image

i gritted my teeth, looked at the page (hodinkee, what's selling where). hrm... well... if we win a monstrous lottery, maybe.
This Rolex is available from Matthew Bain for $250,000.
but in searching some more she does really like the vintage triple date moon phase style. and the sizes are generally ok (33mm to 36mm, mostly). i worry about not getting a frankenwatch or something with a movement in bad shape. i would go up to as much as $1500 one in good condition. she also liked the omega, but those seem mostly out of that price range ($2500 and up from a legit dealer). some breitlings seem to go on ebay at the top of that range. zodiacs in good shape seem to be $500-800 (although i saw one in great shape at a dealer for $1300, which i think is overpriced for a zodiac). and there are a whole lot of other triple date moon phases in that omega style from brands that i either recognize the name, but don't know well (like lemania, which i know as a movement name), or have never heard of.

Indeed you are! I would perhaps look towards a more modern Maurice Lacroix ladies masterpiece moonphase. There must be some of those knocking about? Otherwise take the zodiac option or for something with more class, Movado were making insanely lovely complication watches back then and are starting to become recognised more so.

You might want to check out the Oris Artix Moonphase.

Sadly man's size 42mm though.

Although that said, Google gave me this ladies moonphase at 40mm width.

Sounds like this is a bit beyond budget, Greg, but it is a beautiful watch and would probably be a great size for a lady.

Does your wife know how much you've spent on your own watches? What a dumb question that was! Sorry, of course she does: she's a woman. It's a test; be very careful and err on the side of generosity. It's for your own good.

Very nice. 34mm x 10, running a 2892 no less! But should be affordable too knowing Epos who usually run at CW/hamilton prices. Got to go to the top of the pack if you can find one.
