Help required! Bravingtons watch

Post by village »

Right...i've a mate at work who is trying to get some info on his late uncles watch.
He says it is in good working order and loses about a minute a day.
There are no markings on the rear of the case.

Now all i can dig up is that Bravingtons were a distributor of watches during WWII, who then went on to sell surplus military watches after the war.
Anything else of help would be appreciated.
I have asked him to get a picture of the movement but he isn't inclined to remove the back himself, so unless he changes his mind or i can get him to let me do it it will remain a mystery.

Looks lik it houses a 6498 (second hand at 6). Whether Unitas or not remains to be seen but there is a good chance considering the vintage. I'd have it serviced and wear it.

Won't be a Unitas 6498. More likely AS 984/340 or similar given the size and vintage.
Yes, get it serviced and wear it looks like a tidy watch!

Village,

I can't find any reference of this watch in my watch guide.

There used to be several Companies of 'chain' stores selling jewellery, watches, glassware and pretty nick-nacks and Bravingtons was one of them. Each biggish town had a branch or branches of one or more of the chains. They would put their own name on watches made for them in England (cheaper end) or in Switzerland (dearer end) Bit like H Samuels used to be years ago. It may well be Bravingtons started as described from the wartime. I think there are still branches of Bravingtons in existence...UB
