Re: Grails and Fails Game!
I find it ridiculous that smegwina complains about small watches yet hasn't bought an oversized Panerai
Grail - Panerai Bronzo
Fail - Invicta Hydromax

Re: Grails and Fails Game!
Decision time!!!!
Thanks again to everyone, this is a most enjoyable thread, and I have spent far more time considering your choices than I originally intended!
Neil.....
The Portuguese Perpetual Calendar is a truly lovely watch and would certainly be a grail...were it not for the Big Pilot version. The hands on the Portuguese are just a bit slender for my neanderthal tastes.
The IWC tank is certainly a fail for me... Far too classy, I am not a fan of Gold square cases (round is fine) and too much empty dial. I can see others loving it though.
Richard......
The Ingenieur hits every note, but I am just not sure about the funny lugs and strap fittings. Everything else is spot on though!
What the hell is that monster with the diamonds! Good lord that is terrifying.
Steve....
The Antoine Martin is simply unbelievable. I do indeed love pretty much love everything about it! That movement is just hypnotic and stunning, the size is almost there and I am leaning towards these multiple dial watches. Availability might be an issue though.
The Bulova is similar to the IWC. I want to like it, but just can't. Silver case might be different?
Atnits......
The Patek is stunning. I can live with the slender hands on this due to the simpler dial. Yet... the date font just jars for me. I know that it is ridiculous, but for me, it just doesn't work! But, god it is a beautiful watch.
The invicta is a difficult one. I dont have a problem with invicta per se, and indeed like large watches, but that is just hideous. There is just no cohesion or plan to the design. It is the way that it is just to be as noticeable and brash as possible.
Greg......
Big Pilot Spitfire.......
Yes, yes, yes........ indeed, I have never looked at this one before, but I will now try to find one as it could just be perfect for me. As I said before, I dont mind gold in a round case, and the dial colour and strap just seem to calm the whole thing down.
The Nomos is probably the most interesting fail here in that I am, sure that I should like it, and I can't give a reason but.... I just don't "get" Nomos. I can appreciate them, can admire them on others, but they just don't do anything for me.
Guy....
I don't know if you got the grail and fail mixed up, but if not you are a genius. This has put me in a weird quandry because they are both fail and grail together!!!!
The graham is absolutely grail material with the exception of the crown guard... yet, I do wonder if I could actually live with it!
The Bremont I should like, do like, but have no desire to own one. No idea why, but there you go!
Bjorn.....
A beautiful watch, but alas, not for me. The curse of the gold cushion case I am afraid, and I am not sure about the half cali dial.
The fail is exactly that..... I would break that PP in seconds, and it would look utterly ridiculous on me!!!!
Om.......
My father had a 47mm sub but not in bronze. Wore it for a while, but the crown guard dug in. If I could get round that, I would love to get a bronze sub.
The invicta is just an aberration that needs shooting! It makes my DeepSea look like a vintage case size.
So, many thanks chaps. A hugely interesting excercise, and one that has yielded two watches that I shall investigate further. The Spitfire and the Antoine Martin.
Picking a winner is almost impossible, you all know me rather too well for my liking! However, by the very nature of him not yet having a go, and for providing a watch that I shall actively investigate, I nominate Greg as the next willing victim.
Gwells, your time is now

Greg, I have not forgotten about you. I shall get your grail and fail up later today when I am out of constant meetings!

Greg, you need a vintage Kon-Tiki diver...
But you don't need one of these (Romain-Jérôme Steampunk watch)...

Grails and Fails Game!
I just HAD to look this one up. It's 52mm diameter, excluding the crown, but is an abominable 29mm high. One report said 29mm to the top of the bezel, with the crystal making it 30+blowfish89 wrote:

The jewel in the Invicta crown. Not...

I could cook a beef casserole in that!

It is Invictas "homage" to the original DeepSea challenge watch.gaf1958 wrote:I just HAD to look this one up. It's 52mm diameter, excluding the crown, but is an abominable 29mm high. One report said 29mm to the top of the bezel, with the crystal making it 30+blowfish89 wrote:

The jewel in the Invicta crown. Not...
The difference is that Rolex morphed it into the DSSD shown in the same photo, (which itself is not everyones cup of tea,)
Invicta created...

Graham Chronofighter was intended as the Grail due to its high technical spec and 'aero' twist, that I thought you'd appreciate; accepting that you'd rather be stuck with the cream squirter lever. Suggesting an IWC would be a bit obvious.
Jaguar is the fail because, whilst I know you like Bremont and own a Jaguar, its just too specialist.
Must get on and think of a selection for gwells.

You were spot on! Out if the two I would probably take the Graham!!!!Bahnstormer_vRS wrote:Absolutely put them the correct way around.smegwina wrote:Decision time!!!!

Re: Grails and Fails Game!
For Greg....
The Grail - almost impossible to find, gorgeous colour and design, a Brand that Greg loves and loads of vintagy goodness.
The Fail - nothing wrong with the watch per se, but oversize numbers, the canteen crown protector and it is all just a bit clumsy for Greg.
