AVO, I haven't replied because I've never had a true grail watch* - one that I felt I MUST HAVE to the exclusion of all others - so I can't really put myself in your position.

For me, I like watches with different looks, movements and functionality, so that I have a choice of what to wear for different occasions. I couldn't imagine having just one main watch for most things. If acquiring a watch required me to sell off a lot of my other favourite watches, I would say it cost too much.

If you had watches you felt "meh" about, by all means dispose of them, but I get the impression you've carefully chosen the pieces you bought and painstakingly built up your collection.

So I agree with Kip's 2-savings-funds solution.

*the Polerouter was always a favourite of mine, but even then I never seriously thought of getting one until my research and discussion with Wis reassured me that prices for Polerouters were manageable (to me)

I agree, to a point. The thirst will not be quenched. But the "grail" or "grails" will continue to give great pleasure even so. Greater than a host of other watches. Mind you, a grail need not be expensive. Only special, for you/me.

After inheriting my old man's collection I have become more conscious in my purchases, that they have to be significant and different enough so that I am adding to, instead of repeating, what's already there.

I believe there won't be a true grail, but it certainly makes the watch more special if you know the pleasure will continue to your next, and hopefully many more generations after. So I believe for me, personally, whether to jump on a "grail" will depend on whether it meets the criteria as stated, and if it does then although it means off-loading a few personal favorites (those which don't come close to collection grade), I will look at it as investment on enjoyment which goes beyond my own.

So, AVO, have you decided on the way forward?

Not really, no.
I'm somewhere near Kip's suggestion, though. I've been looking again at the SOTC and there's a lot of stuff (most of it) that I want to keep.
We'll see, but I don't anticipate a massive sales drive in the immediate future.

Don't worry - we can help with that; just photograph your collection, post it on here, and we'll tell you what to sell/keep!

That's where it breaks down unfortunately, because everyone has a different opinion, and the only one who can make that decision is me. I could do it systematically based on how often they are worn or what I could get for them, but I find it hard to be that objective.

I went through this in the past, and then simply worked out which ones I'd really miss and which ones I could convince myself that they bugged me. It's surprising what you can achieve whilst being honest with yourself. Keep your eyes on the prize, you'll get a watch that will have grinning from lug to lug, how many watches do you have that really achieve that a the moment?
Have - quite a few
Want - not too much

Good question, hard to quantify...grinning from lug to lug doesn't quite describe it. It's a bit more subtle.
Downer had his "flippers-remorse" scale of watches he had sold, whereas I have the WHF scale ("Watch Happiness Factor") - this can change with a different day, weather, clothes, mood, almost anything really. Some of them, like sunlight, just improve the mood. I don't keep watches with low HF for long, but most of the current collection score highly. Sometimes I feel a watch is ready for flipping and it jumps right back into favour.
