I have a G-Shock (solar and radio controlled) which I use for checking the times of the other watches. I have tried to wear it but the strap is awful. And from what I have read the conversion kit to allow you to use NATOs etc is not that great.

I use cheap Chinese autos (for a fraction of the price of a G-Shock) which on metal or a NATO are great as beaters. If the job I am doing is extremely mucky I just take my watch off and put it in my pocket until later.

That being said.... those things can take a beating, have plenty of functions and have plenty of fans. All that for a minimum investment. :?

Shall we just rename the forum TZ-UK MkII then?

Seconded

Surely Christopher Ward are a safe option... oh, wait a minute... as you were

I really cannot see the fascination with G shocks. Mate of mine used to be REALLY into watches in a big way (Yema, Breitling, Zenith owner) and then bought a G shock and has worn nothing else for years. Perhaps they really are as good as everyone says, but I have no desire to find out!

Not quite Apocalypse Now 'horror, the horror' but almost. A friend of mine had a couple and wore one out on a suited and booted night. It started the evening looking like a carbuncle on his weedy wrist and ended the evening covered in beer and mens urinal matter when my mate had finished demonstrating how tough it was. Turned out it wasn't tough enough to handle getting the good news from my boot heel at 3am the next morning.
