Free Duty & Tax anyone?

Post by alphajet »

Had an e-mail from Gnomon Watches offering to pay the duty and tax on all watches under $650 plus the same and free UPS delivery on any over $650. Not a bad deal as the duty is often a sticking point on imports.
Never bought a watch from them but did get some straps last year seem to be a good company to deal with and are the only outlet I am aware of for Dievas watches.

I've bought my Steinharts from them. They have always provided CW class customer service.

Just did a quick compare around three/four Steinharts on Gnomon versus the Steinhart site (using latest dollar/euro to Sterling exchange rate)s. To my reckoning the offer saves about 5% on the watches under $650 and 5% + 15 Euros delivery on those over $650. Not quite in the ballpark of the "up to 25%" savings but not to be sniffed at.

watches and watch accessories are zero-rated for duty in the UK, are they not?

You should only be paying VAT if the watch comes from outside the EU, or there was not vat paid at POS.

There will most likely be a handling fee if VAT needs to be added.

Have I got something confused?

Gnomon are based in Singapore, so in UK we would pay custom charges plus 20% VAT. :(
