Don't worry....history tells me she will soon forgive/forget. Anyway it's worth a bit of grief to get such a cracking bunch of watches although for me the ranger and explorer are a bit too similiar but both top drawer. Enjoy the watches and maybe take the missus out for a nice lunch!
Cheers now, Paul

First CW bought in June 2014 which quickly rises to 10 before you joined the Forum in September.

Your first post advised us that your collection was complete (for now).

Sold 9 briskly and now have 3 lovely watches in the Black Bay, the Ranger and the Explorer.

Now your collection is complete, again, and you're not buying another watch for 5 years.

We'll see.

Congratulations. I like the Ranger too.

The more posts that I read of this sort on all forums, not just here, the more I think that it isn't watch collections that 'mature' but rather the people doing the collecting.

I give myself that label too.

It's very gratifying to buy a new watch, particularly an expensive one, stick it up on the forum and sit back and wait for all the nice comments that help justify the purchase, and to bask in the glow of knowing that you have impeccable taste.

Alas, it is a temporary fix if this is your mindset, and soon thoughts will be turning to repeating the whole process until you're bored with it all, or go bankrupt!

I like to think I've matured now, and buy only what I like and for my own reasons. If I share it with the community here, it's because I think people will be genuinely interested, which is why I restrict it to stuff that people may not have heard of or considered these days.

This is not meant to be a curmudgeonly post, sorry if it sounds like one, I think the watches you have purchased are great and I'm pleased you're happy with them.

There is generally no harm in buying watches of course, even expensive ones, as long as it doesn't leave you financially mired, or damage your relationships with loved ones! :)
Ideal number of watches in your collection = current number of watches + 1...

Again, I wouldn't want to sound curmudgeonly either, but I do find myself agreeing with some of the comments made by Tooks.
There are many ways to build a collection, and I have noticed that for a number of people it follows the consolidation pattern –this usually means selling up a proportion of your existing collection in order to move up in the quality and price range.
There is nothing wrong with that, and I have certainly sold on a number of pieces that I bought with a view to experimenting. Although I find that I am still prey to the odd impulse purchase, these are becoming fewer and I have actually walked away recently from watches that I am fairly sure I would have committed to not long ago.
I have thought about selling up many times, with a view to finishing up with just an outstanding vintage watch, a high-quality modern watch and a beater, but I enjoy my eclectic collection too much.
I wish you great joy with your new collection.

I took that as gospel and duly went out and purchased the Ranger. On return home she was ready for me. Apparently the 'do want you want' was sarky. She had every intention of coming home and giving me what for, and that was before the purchase. Basically I sneeked this purchase in. I have had to promise nothing more until I'm 50...
Sweet Jesus! That kind of comment would be enough to leave me quivering in fear, leave alone actually "doing" what I want after

Tooks,
Some excellent points there.

I must admit I have gone on a bit of a whirlwind watch trip over the past couple of years. Going from a mix of a collection to an automatic only collection to a quartz only collection to a CWL heavy collection to today.

During this time I sampled every (most) styles and size of watch. I admire many watches but I now what type i prefer to keep and wear and those i like to look at. I have enjoyed the experince and the trip immensely and truth be told it hasn't cost me too much.

The CWL collection was supposed to be the end of the road for the previously mentioned 5 years, until it suddenly dawned on me that I had almost enough value in my collection to do what i wanted to do in 5 years time - so why not bring it forward. The problem was that I needed to sell the CWLs now while they held value being almost new. I felt after christmas they would lose value too quickly to achieve this.

Every watch in my small collection jumps out at me as fantastic and fits all the criteria of what I have learned in my journey. They are versatile and easy go read.

It is fantastic if others congratulate and admire but the main aim is to look down and be happy with looking at the time. Watches need to suit you and your style not suit what others think. This hobby/obsession is too expensive to appease others.

I totally agree with the finance side of things - no matter who you are, you should never harm your familys lifestyle in the dream of a hobby. Security for the family is too important. On family, my wife is happy now (as long as I dont mention - perhaps i need...). Out of interest I have financed these purely with the sales of my watches and my titainium cycles. Injury means that hobby is pretty much curtailed.

I don't forsee a need for another as i have THE watches I like - with the exception of potentially one. A Rolex datejust 2. For me that will be the one I can dream of adding in years (many) to come.

All is exceptional at home and will be...

Thanks Graham,
I know people put the Explorer and Ranger in the same bracket. Yes they are the style I like but they are very different and as you say versatile and quality
