Bulova Precisionist

Post by alphajet »

I have been facinated with the Bulova Precisionist movement since it recently appeared for sale.
These are Bulova's claims:
The world's most accurate watch with a continuously sweeping second hand. Two of the factors that affect accuracy in a quartz watch are temperature changes and vibration frequency. Bulova Precisionist technology addresses both by adding a third prong to the quartz crystal and increasing the total vibrations to eight times the frequency of a standard quartz watch.
Precisionist is a quartz watch with a second hand that beats 16 times per second, while those on standard quartz watches beat only one time per second. As a result, the continuous motion of the Precisionist second hand is even more fluid than all mechanical watch second hands that beat only 8 to 10 times per second.
With a frequency of 262.144 kilohertz, Precisionist offers the highest vibrational frequency available in any watch today. This dramatic increase in frequency diminishes the effect of temperature fluctuations and produces extraordinary precision. Most quartz watches are accurate to 15 seconds a month. Bulova Precisionist is accurate to... 10 seconds... a year.
The most comprehensive and potentially revolutionary product launch from Bulova since the debut of Accutron 50 years ago, Precisionist brings the watch industry a new sense of dynamism, an excitement that redefines the expected.
I have mentioned these watches before but was unsure about the existing models. Anyway this one a Champlain has grown one me so I pulled the trigger on the titanium version, it is a large watch 45mm across the bezel and a chunky bracelet the stainless steel one was a little on the heavy side for every day wear.
I am very pleased with this watch so far, timing is spot on still with my waveceptor and the second hand is a joy to look at. I will probably have to look for a vintage Bulova spaceview hummer to complete the collection.
Here are some pics.

I must admit that those movements pique my interest as well....i do wish Bulova would stop using the tuning fork symbol though.

Can't see that happening, an instantly recognised logo that also looks good in the twelve o'clock on most watch faces.

Is there a video showing the sweep hand movement anywhere?

Oh that's what it is. I thought it was bull's horns in a Minoan style for the BULova part of the name.

I was looking at these in a shop window two days ago. Love watching the second hand, very unsure on the styling (the one you have is the nicest I've seen) and particularly dislike the 'scissor' handle look on the end of the second hand.

Nothing from Bulova on battery life, but from other sources on the web I expect reduced life over a normal quartz, maybe similar to radio controlled atomic clock watches like the Casio Waveceptor.
As Bulova is now owned by Citizen it would be nice to see this technology combined with their Eco-Drive, no worries about batteries then for a few years.

I think the "scissor" handle is meant to be the infinity symbol.

Yes they certainly are...and you have to be careful that the missus doesn't catch you watching them.
