Bulova Devil Diver / Flyer GMT

Post by missF »

This isn’t a brand new release but I came across it while looking at the Doxa sub300. There are three watches in the oceanographer fold, and the dive version is:
A diver
A flier GMT (Miyota 9075)
Has a full lume dial plus lumed bezel
Has an internal cyclops 8)
Has a beautiful vintage style plus weird 3D cylinder hour markers 8)

The other two versions in the pic are a red/blue 24hr bezel version and a root beer version. My favourite is the diver, even though I find the addition of a 24hr internal ring to a dive watch a bit of information overload. I’m also not sure if I’d wake up one day and find I couldn’t bear the sight of the slightly tiny hands any more…

I love all of them. Love the tiny GMT hand, love the internal cyclops, love the bling of the root beer. Bulova are attracting my eye at the moment with what I think are really funky upgrades of their vintage catalogue

They're a nice watch Lindsey.

I've got the non-GMT Oceanographer Reissue Snorkel 666ft

I really like the indices, they're like an acrylic tube with lume in the bottom.

I think Bulova have always offered what I might call "acquired taste aesthetics": you love 'em, you hate 'em, it's up to you.

I appreciate you showing us these three unorthodox beauties. I'd need to try one on to know if the appeal of the hands could overcome the cyclops thing: I really don't like cycloptics so that for me would be a demerit. The colours work for me.

The hands? I can't bring myself to attach the word short 'cos I'm okay with them not being long and slender: after all we can't all be long and slender!! They rather remind me of the paddle hands I used to retrofit onto Vostok Scuba Dude watches.

Ultimately are they "serious watches" or are they "department store watches" designed principally to be eye candy? Lacking crown guards, nonetheless my guess is that they'll work well so, quite possibly successful with "one watch guys" rather than the kind of multiple ownership nutters (with it seems at least one clear exception!!) who live in fora like this one.

A quick hop over to Whodunkee? to check out prices etc: whoops! That's just spoiled it - too much money!! Over to EBay and great news, these watches are not exclusive to phewstinkee but can be had elsewhere, new for around £600. Good job. missF please take one for the team?

Yes, if I had a budget and could have only one watch I'd just need to get past the cyclops.

Great run-down @tikkathree
I do think that Bulova make some terrible Department Store efforts, and probably time will tell if their vintage revival really does mean a new strand of thought for the brand.
For me, for now, I’m loving the H Samuel’s vibe of shiny trinkets that I loved as a teenager who couldn’t afford a single one of them. So it may just be nostalgia that makes me love my JetStar, and makes me think that Hell yeah - I could totally rock a root beer! 8)

I saw these on TZUK a forum member had the full lume version. Thought they looked really cool price seemed a little high but I guess with a little wait they can be found at a more reasonable price. Love the look and I would definitely buy one.

Not to hand, I don't think.

I'll see what I can rustle up.
