You have no choice, Steve. Apollo 9 was in orbit the day you were born. You're fated. :D
Looks like my wife, has no choice either. I'll tell her to start saving.
Thanks for the info.

Brilliant news. I would just say go to an AD and try on all of the options and go for whatever one tickles your pickle.
Go for it, they are amazing!

Enjoy the orgy of trying-on!
Mine is a day-date in blue (Valjoux 7751): no longer made, but I chose it because my other chronograph is black (EP .410).
They are my everyday watches: on balance I wear the Speedy more than the Zenith. You can't go wrong with a classic Speedmaster: so just get the one that feels and looks 'right' for you.

Sounds like a great plan Simon.
As others have suggested, definitely try some on at an AD to find which version suits you best.
Then shop around for the best price/service online and try to see if an AD will match the price.
Looking forward to hearing how you get on mate.
A significant watch purchase is always a fantastic event, Enjoy it.

Birthday Watch Too

Sapphire or hesalite? It's a hard one to answer and as Aifo has said, you could write a thesis on the subject and still not come up with a definitive answer.

As may surprise no one, I own both sapphire and hesalite versions. Do I prefer one over the other? Truthfully, no. They are a little different admittedly, but in reality there's very little in it for me. One thing I've noticed is that the grey crystal edge you often see on sapphire Speedys is pretty much only visible in photos, it's not something that you see in real life, so don't let that put you off. My hesalites have picked up remarkably few marks, but it will inevitably happen. It's not something to be worried about though as it's an easy fix, albeit one you're unlikely to have to worry about with sapphire.

I will admit that I do like looking at the 1863 through the sapphire back, it's one of the little pleasures you get when strapping the watch on, but on the flip side the standard case back is probably slightly more comfortable for me as the sapphire moves around a little when my wrist is sweaty (an unfortunate inevitability given where I live). The engraved steel back is much less subject to that, however even with global warming, the UK is still quite a bit less hot and humid that Oz.

My understanding of the movements is that *technically* the 1861 which uses a couple of (shock, horror!) plastic parts is slightly better than the all metal 1863, but practically there's nothing in it, so IMO it's of no real concern other than seeing the movement, which I will admit is a plus.

Buy one. Either one. It's unlikely that you'll regret it either way.

On Saturday I went trying on watches but the 3 high end AD's in the shopping area where I was didn't have the 006 so tried on the 005 and the Moonwatch is everything that comments/reviews/owners have said...it just fits on the (my) wrist superbly, doesn't look too big, isn't too thick etc etc.

They were about to offer me a discount on the 005 as they didn't stock the 006 but I stopped them before the salesperson asked the Manager, in case I liked the reduction. I was told that Omega are due to increase their prices from tomorrow ... now how much of that is sales talk I don't know but all luxury goods seem to be increasing by 5-10% (Brexit, £ to Euro exchange rate) so expect an increase.

Anybody bought a Speedy from internet ... Watchmaster, Joma or others ?

In anticipation of prices possibly going up as soon as tomorrow I've just placed an order through Watchmaster, so in a few days I'll be able to let you know...

They were the cheapest by over £200, offer free delivery, free returns and by using PayPal Pay After Delivery I get to try the watch at home and then send it back if I don't like it (which is unlikely, I know) without actually parting with any money :D

311.30.42.30.01.006 - the 'sapphire sandwich' as downer so brilliantly described it :D

It was my preference all along so it was never really in doubt.

Great choice - although i can't claim credit for the name, having heard the watch described as such several years ago when I was looking for mine.

Yes, it's what they're commonly known as, but as I mentioned earlier, I don't think there's a wrong choice with these. Unless you count not buying one
.... I'm not at all biased :)
