Re: Beaters
I will confess, Bernie, that I have considered a G-Shock and may well get one before I go off long-distance yomping again (maybe next year!)
But the Makos are cool for the pool, G-Shocks are not!

With appropriate protection you don't need to worry about wearing a beater!

Re: Beaters
My only beater. doesn't really take much punishment, the worst being the rapids at centre parcs, and of course general gardening duties. I rather enjoy collecting the odd knock, scratch or scuff just enough to give it some character

Re: Beaters
Thanks for that clarification Pete, I'm sure we'll rest much more peacefully knowing that.tikkathree wrote:The roughest things I do involve chainsawing logs and butchery (separately you understand).
However for the most part, it seems that I'm not totally alone. The term beater is thrown around by most of us, but many do not truly use the term in the way it is generally understood. I get the message that a beater is -maybe- a watch that many of us wouldn't cry or curse aloud in public about if it picked up a few scratches, but might shed a tear in private, or at least hold some regrets about it. But it's still one we tend to take a degree of care with anyway, sometimes significantly and unconsciously so.
I love the fact that I'm not the only one to remove a watch if it's in a chance of harms way. Thanks for the responses everyone...

Re: Beaters
I do think the whole trying to keep watches in pristine condition is very much the behaviour of folk like us who inhabit watch forums and have a "collection" of watches.
I remember talking to a friend of my brother in law whose Rolex Explorer looked rather beaten up. It certainly wasn't a case of "this is my beater", it was more a case of being his only watch and he wore it.
He had always wanted a Rolex and saved up and bought one for his 40th birthday and it was his pride and joy.
He was so pleased with it that he wore it all the time. He didn't even take it off to shower. It was kept on for work as a TV cameraman, golf, gardening, washing the car, DIY, swimming and beach holidays etc..
When I saw the watch he had worn it day in day out for almost 10 years without a service. He seemed pleased when I told him that if he sent it to Rolex for a service it would come back as good as new.
Perhaps in the real world his behaviour would be regarded as the norm and it's us lot that are strange!

Re: Beaters
^^ interesting story neil.
i wonder if having a collection, which is changeable over time, and haviing therefore to consider resale value of watches makes watch collectors more in need of either having a beater, or being extremely cautious with the watch you're wearing. i'm not cautious with my watch at all, but have never considered that i would ever sell it. so any marks on it belong to me. of course, there are forumites who never sell a watch on so this may not apply across the board. but i like neil's story of the battered explorer - i think that's a watch i'd really like to try on

Re: Beaters
^^^ I think that there is a generic "collectors" gene, regardless of whether it's watches, stamps, Dinky toys etc.., meaning that the collector wants to have the best (generally meaning best condition) items in their collection. Also the point that you are collecting something means you want to look after it.
I think this will apply whether a flipper or a sell nothing collector. As the value of a collection grows and more funds get sunk into the obsession/hobby/interest maintaining the value becomes more important, therefore with watches even more care is taken, or at the extreme some of the watches may be safe queens never worn other than when sitting on the sofa. If your a flipper, you have to maintain the condition to ensure you don't take too much of a hit when you move it on.
Just my view, other views are possible.

Re: Beaters
agreed!
but your story of the rolex explorer is interesting because the owner takes enormous pride in his watch, yet it's all scratched and dinged. i think your description of the 'collector' is spot on, and not everyone who ownes a watch or two is in that category.

My watches now tend to live rather babied lives, and are all pretty much pristine. In the past, I have bought numerous "beaters" only to realise when they arrive that they are far too nice to smash up and accordingly they tend to join the "besties"
Yet it wasn't always to be. My old Navitimer was my only watch for years and went with me through uni, flight school, work etc etc.
Looking at it now, the condition is pretty poor, and would terrify most on here. Indeed, if it was part of my modern collection, I would also be horrified.....
Yet, to me (other than the bezel that will be hopefully be replaced) the condition is a storybook of my younger life, and each dent/scratch/dink tells a story.
It wasn't a beater though and never has been. It was just "my watch".

Re: Beaters
I've got a G-Shock which I intended to be a "beater" but as it's a watch I dreamed of as a kid I don't use it as one. I wear it around the house and in the garden etc but still take it off if there's a chance it will get damaged. I picked this up at a watch fair and it's already pretty beat up so I think this will be the beater in my collection from now on. I won't worry about damaging it as I don't think I'd notice if I did it would just blend in with previous marks. If it was pristine when I got it I'd try and keep it that way

Re: Beaters
You may be onto something there; I think that's the only way to get a true beater for myself - buy one that's already beaten up.
But they're the ones I always skip over at first glance. Have to get over the habit of half a lifetime.

Re: Beaters
Another vote for G-Shock as a beater - absolutely indestructible - believe me, I've tried!
