Yes....that's the only detail that would prevent me buying it on-line, without seeing it..
Lovely watch - hope the new C9 Chrono is close to that depth of colour. Like many I have had an eye on a Nomos but never quite found something that stood out enough for me to buy. This is definitely in the 'buy it' category, the dial hands etc are all perfectly realised. But just can't quite feel the same way about the case - not sure I like the way the lugs join on to the main body, and that crown guard just looks odd. Not sure what the thinking behind that bit is. There's one on Chrono24 at the moment that has a clearer picture of the crown - see pic 3 on http://www.chrono24.com/en/nomos/zueric ... 2&tab=pics

And as for Nomos' exchange rate - I fell foul of it this weekend too. Wish the site let you pay in Euro rather than take the nearly 1:1 exchange rate. I was buying a strap and 60 euros converted to £58 at checkout.

As for the blau gold Zurich, I have a suspicion it will look even better in reality, subject to reconciling the crown issue of course.

Thanks for the link. The crown arrangement is the only feature that puts me off. I can cope with the lugs, but I fear the crown could be a deal-breaker. Hopefully, I'll be able to see one in the steel before too long. Meanwhile, my coffers will be emptied in the direction of the Bremont Solo, so I will have plenty of time to research the Zurich.

I did notice on the Nomos store that their exchange rate includes applicable duties and taxes, and that they charge the same as the dealers in each country. These two items help explain the odd exchange rates. The exchange is out of line for Canada as well. The exchange on a Tangente is about $250/200 Euro too high. On our trip to NYC last year I did notice that the online price was the same as the dealer price though.

As for the AD in Germany, have you phoned them? If they are actually interested in selling you a watch, they may be willing to open outside regular hours if you call and make an appointment.

If purchased within the EU there shouldn't be any duties or taxes?

I agree. If I went ahead with this, I'd definitely find a way to purchase in EUR. No point in paying over the odds.

Do let us know if you find a way to do this - maybe via a VPN? I'm bound to succumb to a Nomos soon (probably an Orion Datum) and their currency arrangements are very irritating.

Not sure about all on line banking services but Lloyds have just introduced the facility of transferring euros or any other currency to named payees, with their bank details to virtually all foreign countries. I am sure the Nomos shop in Glashutte would cooperate.

I notice that my local branch of Mappin & Webb now sell Nomos watches.

They're not showing on their website but they are listing their Regent St store and three others as Nomos ADs.

So might not need a trip to Germany after all.......

Yes, there are several AD's in UK, including Jura. However, the pricing remains an issue...

For example, the base steelback Zurich no date........

Jura price............... GBP 2,580
Nomos store price..... GBP 2,390
Nomos store in euro.. EUR 2,560 (about GBP 2,060)

All prices include taxes and delivery.

I remember, a few years ago, the furore surrounding car prices in Europe, where hoards of people were going to Belguim/Germany to grab a Ford Fiesta and save a ton of money. I thought price equalisation/transparency had been achieved in most EU markets, but clearly it has not reached the world of watches.......

Remitting EUR 2560 direct to the Nomos store or their bankers seems to be the answer if their are no differential VAT issues

Anyone care to arrange a long weekend in Glashutte to visit Nomos, A.Lange & Sohne, Glashutte Original, Muhle and, of course, the world famous German Watch Museum. With Dresden only 20 miles down the road could be fun!

There are no VAT issues as Germany is in the EU. In fact there are benefits the German VAT rate is 19% :) whereas the UK is 20 :( %.

Richard,
You mentioned that you are in Germany regularly. Why not purchase the watch, and have it shipped to your hotel in Germany? German sale, German price. Problem solved.

I can do that, or I can get one of my German friends to buy it on my behalf, or possibly I can buy it direct from the local AD. No worries with the buying/spending process.... :)

Just a question of whether or not the watch grabs me, and it's difficult to be 100% sure (at the price point these are) without seeing one.

However, I'm off to Germany in the morning, so I'll try to get to the AD somehow, although it always seems a bit frantic....

Having said all that, I will not have the funds in place until 2013, so it's all a bit academic. :)
