It doesn't seem upscale for Seiko. To me it looks like a Bulova open heart you could get at any suburban shopping mall, also for a price of $400.

I'd say this one is upscale for Seiko at $150,000, the Seiko Credor Spring Drive Sonnerie:

Thanks for noticing watchlover1 :)

For reference purposes, this is how it looks in black

A big 'no' to the one featured in the opening post.

Another big no from me. It is the mix of two-tone, slightly naff open window to the movement and case design that just says normal, rather than exemplary. Sorry.

not my cup of tea, don't really like openheart dials anyway, but, both the Aifo's black dial version and the plain white stainless version available from SeiyaJapan are much more appealing to me at least.
Incidentally SeiyaJapan has a number of Seikos at a similar price to the OP watch which I think are MUCH nicer. :D

does anyone agree that this is a very serious step upwards for Seiko (ignoring their ridiculously priced Grand Seikos)
No. It is nice that their movements an now be hand wound and hack but that is something that most other movements have done for decades. The look of the watch is very much like the Seikos on the High Street shops. I never rated Seikos based on what I had seen so I was surprised how much Seikos were liked on the forums. Then I found out there was a whole other world of Seikos that for some reason the High Street shops just don't stock.

Most of the nice Seikos are Japanese domestic market only, not sure why they wouldn't launch them worldwide. Check out the SARB line, they are highly regarded for the value proposition. Available from a couple of Japanese dealers that sell online.
