A guide to buying a Rolex Part 1 and 2
Re: A guide to buying a Rolex Part 1 and 2
Well done Downer. It's clearly the right route for you. I saw someone wearing that Explorer last year and thought it looked great.
Did you put the Damasko on sale here, by the way? I must have missed it!

the "g" is for Greg...
Re: A guide to buying a Rolex Part 1 and 2
good reasons there and would agree with much of that - look forward to seeing the photos once you get it!downer wrote: I confirmed my pre-conceived ideas: The Explorer II is my next watch. For me (and I accept it is not for everyone), this one represents the good side of Rolex. It is almost completely de-blinged with a brushed case and bracelet, function is put ahead of form with the perfectly clear dial and hands, and yes, even the cyclops has a purpose. The build quality is excellent with the integration between case and strap as a specific highlight. The crown operation, the clasp - everything - just feels right. Finally, the Explorer shows clear links with the historical line of watches that spans several decades without unnecessary changes.

Re: A guide to buying a Rolex Part 1 and 2
I only like the Submariner and GMT Master from the Rolex range. I have both so will probably never buy another unless something new and wonderful comes out - but I feel that unlikely for a long time. The new Explorer II (particularly the polar version) is quite nice but doesn't quite do it for me. I love my Rolex watches but at the same time feel many of their other models are horrid. We all have different tastes and opinions of course.
Omega have a bigger range of attractive watches and being somewhat cheaper than Rolex are certainly more accessible to many. Also the Bond connection greatly helps. I can certainly see me having another Omega one day, maybe a Speedmaster.
Until then its another CW for me

I would agree with most of that, although my personal preference is to the base models such as airkings and datejusts before they gained the engraved rehaut (even though i actually don't mind the rehaut myself but thats when things turned for me design wise), it seems to me that around this time Rolex designs went downhill a fair bit in quest for dollars from gangster rappers but having now looked at alot of vintage Rolex's from each era my thoughts are that Rolex designs have steadily got worse every decade from the 60's i.e very tiny increments until the the turn of the century but at least technologies and bracelets/clasps have been refined.NMS75 wrote:I only like the Submariner and GMT Master from the Rolex range. Congrat Richard, for making your mind up and as Kip pointed out rightly, that baby is already in your pocket once you have your eyes on it.

Damn it. The AD offered a few inducements, but he didn't mention the t-shirt!Aifo wrote:Congrat Richard, for making your mind up and as Kip pointed out rightly, that baby is already in your pocket once you have your eyes on it.
