I don't think Blondie or The Boomtown Rats count as British Neil.

I would add The Smiths and the Pet Shop Boys. The Smiths lead singer Morrisey also released a couple of solo albums late in the 80s.

Those were two bands I could never get into. I tried to get into The Smiths (I love Johnnie Marr’s guitar playing!), but Morrisey’s lyrics were just so depressing. And his stage presence came off as incredibly pretentious to me.

Pet Shop Boys never did it for me. How about Frankie Goes to Hollywood? No one’s mentioned them yet.

Scooter mentioned Frankie Goes To Hollywood. Johnny Marr also appears with Electronic. That would have been right around 90 I think. Morrisey was definitely reserved for those melancholy days

To be fair, when we were moping around dance floors looking winsome and singing ‘heaven knows I’m miserable now’ it did seem to have a bit of irony and self awareness about it. Compare with a young person I read on social media the other day braying about how ‘her needs weren’t being met’ and I’d say that Morissey was pretty upbeat about life  :D

One glaring omission in what has been recommended so far, and I don't know why I didn't mention them last night;-

Emerson, Lake and Palmer.

Not glaring, more a sensible and understandable omission…

They disbanded in 1979. :)

Mind you what do I know, I managed to include two bands that weren’t British in my list.

Some great examples already but for some great lyrics, although more folk/pop rock than New Wave, it can only be Waking Hours by Del Amitri. (They did other great albums but this one snuck into the 80s by the skin of its teeth)

Even so, Emerson, Lake, and Powell (1986), is to me better than much of the later years of the ELPalmer group. Keith tamed himself just a bit and Powell, ex-Rainbow and then soon to be of Black Sabbath, brought a different energy to the music.

Nice suggestion! I haven’t listened to China Crisis in ages. Perhaps tonight with a nice cocktail?

There's a school of thought that the best music came from the mid '60s to early 70's......
