while i am a big five guys fan (the original is about 5-6 miles from me right now and there's one next door), it's not a best meal. best quasi-fast-food burger, it's on the list for sure.

There's one a block away from my work and I eat there a couple times a month...it's a good burger for sure. Just didn't pop into my mind when the subject of best meal came up
Maybe Ruth's Chris or something on those lines, but 5 Guys?

Not necessarily the finest dining ever, and not my best meal out ever, but we recently visited the coast, and whilst my kids were eating fish and chips and mucking about with crablines from the sea wall, I tucked into freshly caught dressed crab accompaiied by a glass of cava whilst I sat next to them. Super fresh crab, glorious sunshine and content, laughing kids. Certainly qualifies as a good time if not fine dining!

As a regular visitor to friends in Cape Town, I've found there's a whole load of fantastic fish restsurants with a bewildering choice of fresh fish that we just don't get in the UK. I've also had some fantastic food in the restaurants located in the many beautiful wineries in Franschoek and Stellenbosch. Eating out in that part of the world never disappoints but my most memorable was the Harbour house restaurant in Kalk Bay www.harbourhouse.co.za/harbourhouse. The food's great but it's the location that really makes it.

No offense intended....but ya'll think Five Guys might be a 'best meal out'?
The one in CG isn't a patch on those in the US.

my two most memorable meals were:

returning from playing polo (estancia in the Cordoba Hills, Argentina), to have a fantastic asado with the gauchos bringing around platter after platter of freshly bbqd beef from one of their own cows - great salads and a good Argentine Red Wine. Simple, high quality ingredients in the right setting.

sitting by the pool in the South of France with close friends - the kids asleep inside after a great day - olives / cheeses / bread / wine all local from the market that day...

lots of fine dining - but setting and people has always made the meal more than the chef.

Happy memories of dinner at Ballymaloe House near Cloyne in County Cork. Wonderful food. Fresh fish sourced locally from Ballycotton Harbour. The chatelaine, Mrs Myrtle Allen, wandering around the dinning room, chatting to all her guests. Must visit again.

Walker's Fish and Chip Restaurant/Takeaway in Bridge Street, Truro.

£4.95 for a portion of cod and chips and so big my wife and I shared one.

I'm easily pleased.

A little place in the French Quarter in New Orleans (can't remember the name at the moment)....

Best combination of ribs and crabs I ever had! Everything was exceptionally perfect and friendly. Unbelievable service and out of this world prices.

Best steak I ever had was at Lowrys in Chicago.

Quick dip into into the forum tonight and could not resist sharing my best meal out. When returning from a very satisfactory visit to No1 Park St. I stopped off at Oz's Burger Trailer on the A4 layby at Maidenhead Thicket. A Bacon Butty and a cup of Rosie Lee never taste better, British cuisine at its best.

Malta - some sort of dish in which steak was beaten thin and folded over a filling of ragut style sauce and eggs, olives - lots of stuff - whilst sitting in a medieval tower overlooking the Grand Harbour.

I seem to recall the dish was actually Italian... certainly the wine was ;)
