wrist shots

Post by missF »

please take a look at this pic, and see if you can help me out.....

Image

this is my new 38mm trident gmt. in this pic it looks as if the watch is wider than my wrist - it definitely looks like it doesn't fit me well at all..... (in other words i look like i'm less of a WIS for wearing a watch that's too big for me! ). truth is, my watch takes up about 2/3 the width of my wrist, and fits me like a horological glove.....

what am i doing wrong? how can i take wrist shots that look like every other wrist shot i see on the forum?! :problem:

The secret is distance. You simply need longer arms. :)

Looking at that particular pic shows that you need to turn your wrist towards you, to bring the bottom of the watch down. That particular angle shows some skin below the bottom lugs and appears that the top lugs protrude beyond the top of your wrist. In other words, try to get it a bit more “square on” if that makes sense.

If you can’t get enough distance, take a photo in the mirror, then mirror reverse it in an editing app. Gets you the distance, and a bit of cropping sees it at a decent apparent size...

Sorry for my flippant answer. :D

Seriously though, it is about distance. Using my largest watch to demonstrate:

Same camera, same watch, same wrist. The only difference is the distance between watch and camera.

Helps also to avoid the wide-angle setting on your camera.

Downer's example demonstrates the effect well. The technical term is lens foreshortening. You can read more about it on this Expedia link or Google it for perhaps a more user friendly explanation.

It is an important point you bring up missF, because that is probably a big part of why watches almost always look better on someone else than when one looks at one’s own wrist. The lack of distance from wrist to eye distorts the perspective.
The lesson is that you should always look in a mirror to judge how a watch fits your wrist. :D
