I reckon you should find your nearest Majestic.
https://www.majestic.co.uk/?gclid=EAIaI ... gKlKPD_BwE

The best thing is their no quibble guarantee:
https://www.majestic.co.uk/services/mon ... -guarantee

This works - basically, if you don't like it, you get your money back.

I've been subscribed to their concierge offer (just mixed reds), but am about to leave as it just a wee bit too frequent for me as the only drinker in the house.
This enables you get a selection of wines at competitive prices. You try them and get a replacement if you don't like it, and build up a base knowledge of what's available, and what tastes good to you.

We all taste things differently, and this gives you a way to explore your own palette.
There's always time for one more.

I'll second red blends. Rioja and Ribera del Duero are two great Spanish regions. Rhone and Chateaunuef du Pape for France. Lots of great value priced wines in the first 3 of those 4 regions, but the 4th is worth the money when you can find one at the lower price range for the region (~$30 USD). I'd start with these and then expand outwards.

US wines have become stupid expensive, but there are some great ones out there. There are many great red blends, cabernets, and Syrah coming out of Washington these days. Willamette Valley, Oregon and Russian River, California produce some great Pinot Noirs, but they are totally different in taste. Willamette will have some acidity that will cut through fat on red meat, but the California ones will be easy drinking and great by themselves or with meat/cheese plate.

Find a good wine shop and get to know the proprietor. That’s the best way to explore wines. Go in and tell them what you’ve already tried and liked (and dislikes!), then let them steer you.

You’ll soon enough develop an understanding of your own palette and some knowledge of wines.

We love a nice rioja and would recommend the Tesco finest rioja reserve vino del cura. Very nice. If you feel like splashing out a little more the Faustino I is gobsmackingly good! Great everyday reds are the barefoot range. The merlot, Malbec and cab sav are smoother than a cashmer codpiece at not much money.
Cheers now, Paul

@stefs - thanks for the Tesco finest Rioja recommendation. I'll look for that.

I know on the malt whisky front their 12 year old Highland Malt is really a Dalmore that is usually 50% more expensive.

Hopefully the same principle applies to their Rioja.

I don't think Tesco sell their Tesco finest blended whisky any more in Scotland or at least nobody buys it. It used to be a bargain price but thanks to minimum alcohol pricing in Scotland ( :censored: ) is now the same price as the main brands therefore no demand for it.

I do love a nice red wine. I prefer the fuller bodied grapes such as Shiraz, Malbec and Merlot (which some prefer as a bit smoother than Shiraz).

If you have an Aldi in your locale, from their Exquisite range (purple band on the label and purple bottle top) the Australian Shiraz and Argentinian Malbec are both excellent and great vfm.

If you are feeling flush, an Italian Barolo, made from the Nebbiolo grape, is superb but pricey.

I also like some of the French classics but some of the young wines such as the Beaujolais Nouveau that some of my family like I find to be too light for my taste.

Duly noted Patrick regarding the Aldi Exquisite range.
They do a lovely Organic Pinot Grigio too actually for white wine lovers out there.

I agree, Patrick, for the 'blended whisky' but at £25 per bottle their 12 Year Old Highland Single Malt Whisky (and Speyside 12 YO Malt) is surely reassuringly expensive.

Guy, yes £25 is a good price particularly if it’s Dalmore.
