Why for me there isn't a ONE WATCH

Post by tikkathree »

I started by typing into @missF 's post but decided instead to start a new post which you're invited to join in if you like.

Here's a typical "why not" for me:I love this Omega watch which is managed by a pair of tuning forks.

I've just replaced the battery after 3 and a half years and it bursts into life. I put it down on a smooth wooden surface and immediately I hearing it humming audibly and I realise that I'm smiling. That hum makes me smile.

Will I wear it this month or next? Probably not.

Little gold watches like my grandfather used to wear; a chronograph with historical connexions; a classic rectangular design icon for functions and so much more; a smart, dependable GMT that doesn’t mind a dip in the sea; a moderately high-end GMT that enjoys swanning around in posh hotels; a nod to the marine chronometer; titanium sunshine with a cool blue dial; a single hander for when it doesn’t have to be exact…

I could go on but, for me, that’s why.

For me it’s purely down to emotional attachments to certain watches. My El Primero and my IWC mark XVIII remind me of my mum and daughter respectively. I could probably live with my Ingenieur as a one watch but could never sell the other two.

You’ve got a killer little collection! It’s one of my favorites on the forum, just outstanding pieces with good stories behind them.

Buying, owning and selling watches, for me is all part of this mad hobby
I have a hardcore collection of 6 which unless I get into financial difficulties will not be sold. I still enjoy looking, searching and occasionally buying and selling so for me a one watch situation does not exist 🙂

I think this is a critically important point, and illustrates the key difference between someone who has a couple of watches versus someone who collects watches. I have six watches, but I’m never on the hunt for “just one more,” nor have I ever flipped a watch. I can’t imagine I ever would. Consequently, I’d never call myself a collector. I get the thrill of the hunt, though. I’d probably be a collector if I could afford it!

Yes, I couldn't drop to a one watch either, now. In fact I doubt I could get to just 10. :D

Interesting points from both of you. I collect (i.e. “accumulate”) stuff but I don’t “collect” it, if by the latter you understand that I mean cataloguing, curating and so on. I just like watches and wear them, and do a modicum of research on the bits that interest me.

Some people use apps and spreadsheets to track wear, market value and so on. Apart from knowing what I wore on a particular holiday, I haven’t a clue. Some use devices to monitor the precision and accuracy of their watches; I know the approximate rate and do a quick check against a time source. Some people have a record of every watch they’ve owned, where it came from, how much they bought it for, whom they sold it to, when, and for how much. I couldn’t begin to reconstruct such a list.

That’s why I’m not a true collector. I haven’t the discipline to do the routine stuff. I don’t have the collector mentality. I applaud those who do.

@Amor Vincit Omnia

Guilty regarding the app Steve. I use a little access database to store my watch ownership (including purchase and sales details, but I rarely sell any) and record my daily wears. I limit it to one a day, although it would accept multiple wears in a day. I can get a sorted listing of my wears by watch for either a year, or all. I started this in Jan 22, so I've got around 1000 wears in there now. I tend to record the actual accuracy against some watches by a written note against the daily wear, but I'm not always interested in recording the stat. I find it useful to know which watches I wear most.

I know I don't wear dressy watches much. The Tribus I am currently wearing has spent almost a year in the box just about. I just don't pick it up because it's a dressy style. It doesn't help that it's quite tricky to read the time as well.

No guilt, praise or blame, Dave. No right or wrong answers, horses for courses, chacun à son goût, &c.

I know it wasn't rhetorical, but I'm sure there is a word for the sense in which I used "guilty", in the same that a rhetorical question doesn't require a response. (Probably similar to the use of a curse word as an intensive, if you will).

The responses so far cover why for me there isn’t a ONE watch…

A combination of watches that just make me smile, watches with a connection to an event, watches that for me fit with the where I am and what I am doing.

This morning I am wearing a watch that I last wore about a year ago on a walking holiday in Scotland and the Lake District.

The make me smile watch that I set yesterday evening is sitting on the table, as I wait for it to ting, whilst drinking a cup of coffee… :)
