On the one with your son, I am not sure what my eyes are seeing. It looks as though the right side bank of the water is natural (dirt), but a few feet more to the right it appears to be the wall of a dam. Is that what I am seeing, or are my eyes playing tricks on me?Hans wrote:Well thanks guys, I really like to take pics, good to hear you enjoy them. And since this is off-topic, here are some more (on the third one you can see my son):
Where do you guys live?

Nothing wrong with your eyes Joe, here's another one from a bit higher (the rock on the bottom of this photo is the one my son was sitting on):
And here you can see it on Google-maps:
http://www.panoramio.com/map/#lt=47.178 ... &a=1&tab=1
It's in Austria, Kaprun, the biggest Stausee they have in Austria. What's the English word for Stausee? In Dutch it is stuwmeer...

In the US we would call that a dam, like the hoover dam:
http://www.usbr.gov/power/data/sites/hoover/hvrpp3.jpg
What was throwing me is the bank on the right side past the edge of the dam. It's just the way the natural shoreline meets the rightmost corner of the dam made me think that inside the dam wall, it was natural shore line as well. Kind of like if it was a natural lake, and a few feet from the edge of the lake, you dug a big trench and put in a retaining wall. I now realize that is not what is happening.
Cool photo though.

My kind of shots Hans - I lke those a lot. In case you were wanted to know where my interest in photography comes from this might give you a clue, this is my father's site here
Actually I was just trying to say nice pictures again
As for the name of the water I think that man made/artificial lake is a good description for me, I would just see the dam as the construction that is holding the water in place.

I like both too - I'm learning macro though at the moment (by playing) here are my three favourites so far (nowhere near your level but hey!)
actually you can see my landscape tendencies coming through in this one!
Like you said it is the off topic area of the forum!
Oh an in answer to the original question on this thread, I currently live in Salisbury in the UK

Sharp photos. I notice he likes shooting either early or late in the day for the dramatic lighting. I particularly like the second one on this page:jamestux wrote:In case you were wanted to know where my interest in photography comes from this might give you a clue, this is my father's site here

The color is gorgeous, and I love the light on the rocks. It looks more like a painting than a photo.
I was referring more to the engineered structure, which is what was initially puzzeling me about the picture. In the US, referring to the body of water, we would probably just call it a lake regardless of whether it was natural or man-made. The US Army Corps of Engineers made a lot of lakes several decades ago. Most of the younger crowd probably don't even realize they are man-made because they are just known as lakes. They typically have a dam on one end of it that gets used to generate power.jamestux wrote:As for the name of the water I think that man made/artificial lake is a good description for me, I would just see the dam as the construction that is holding the water in place.

We almost got trapped by the tide on that photo Joe!
You're right about the colours, that's what he likes, it's almost his signature - on the others that look more normal they are normally taken just before sunset as it makes colours a lot more saturated. Most people think that he has done a lot to the colours in Photoshop, I'm glad that you realised that's when he was doing it!
You should see them printed at 24x36 (inches) I've actually bought some from him LOL but m favourites are not on his site. You can stand 6 inches away and look at a tiny part of the picture without seeing any pixelation or artefacts because he shoots using a large format camera and scans them in normally - his kit is better than most labs in the UK.

I bow to your close up skills again Hans!
I'm looking for work at the moment as I finished a contract on Friday, I think I might go out practising photography instead... Although my wife would kill me!
Why are you selling the 20D? Are you upgrading to a full frame Canon instead or are you getting a decent camera (Nikon) Only joking but seriously why are you selling, I hope that you are not stopping the photography!
