When you do the daydream thread…???

Post by Amor Vincit Omnia »

It’s just a silly question that occurred to me, and I thought I would start a new conversation rather than sidetracking the daydream thread.

When you post your daydream watch, is there some kind of scenario going through your head which involves you wearing said watch in some daydream location? There certainly is for me, and it almost invariably involves my sybaritic, hedonistic and largely imaginary Mr Toad alter ego.

Usually, it is one of the following**:
  • Relaxing in Etihad or similar First Class en route for some exotic clime
  • Standing at the helm of my gin palace as she skirts some tropical coastline
  • Sipping a rare cognac while listening to tinkling arpeggiations in the piano bar of the Negresco or the Raffles (after a divine dinner)
  • Strolling along a white sand beach listening to the whisper of the gentle waves and the breeze in the coconut palms
  • Driving up the gravelled approach to some aristocratic pile in a sporty little two-seater
**All of the above include an attachment such as Helena Bonham-Carter or similar.

(Mental images courtesy of Messrs Merchant and Ivory)

Mind you, to be fair I am very happy with some of the places I DO get to. 8)

Do your daydream posts go beyond the watch?

A mix of scenarios for me.
1:- A watch that pops in and out of my mind from time to time.
2:- A watch i have recently seen in a YT vid
3:- A watch that another member has or similar to

Perhaps not exactly what the thread is about, but when I bought my Seiko 'Cocktail time' I had a mental image of wearing it in my favourite Lake District hotel. Which I subsequently did, and still do when I get the opportunity. In some ways, it could be my most expensive watch purchase.

^^^ I think any image is as valid as any other. Thanks for the responses.

For me, the daydream thread is about the unobtainable, or at least the very unlikely – I tend not to post images of things I might actually get. YMMV.

We generally visit the Lake District for at least a couple of weeks a year and often add on a couple of nights at somewhere with a decent restaurant at the end of the stay.

What is your favourite hotel?

What is your favourite hotel?
The Lodore Falls by the side of Derwentwater. They have a small number of hotels in the area, we used to stay at The Inn on the Lake (Ullswater) which is also very good.

^^^ Thanks.

I just mentioned to Lodore Falls to Mrs nbg and said that it was one that I hadn’t come across. However she pointed out that we had walked past it the last time that we did a circuit of Derwentwater. :)

We ate at the Inn on the Lake last year, when we stayed in Patterdale.

Interesting idea for a thread. I rarely post on the daydreaming thread because I rarely find myself daydreaming about a watch.

Regarding daydreaming in general, mine are far more pedestrian than the ones you describe (I fully endorse those dreams by the way!). Daydream as fantasy tends to depress me because I know it will never happen. The escapist appeal is overwhelmed by the impossible reality. My typical daydreams fall into few broad scenarios that all border on attainable.

The Perfect Home Daydream
I often daydream about finding the perfect home for my wife and me when we eventually live together in two years. It's usually some variation on the following:
  • a cool mid-century modern home or something rather neutral architecturally to accommodate a mix of eclectic furniture
  • a butler's pantry for entertaining
  • lots of windows with a view that doesn't include neighbor's homes or busy streets
  • a library with built in bookcases
  • a music room
  • a great bar
  • an in-law suite
  • probably a Cartier Tank on my wrist

The Road Trip Daydream
My 2001 MX-5 SE is my pride and joy. Driving it is therapy. This fantasy is a variation on:
  • a road trip to some mildly exotic and relaxing location on twisty backroads
  • me in a tweed jacket and cap and my wife in a flowing headscarf and vintage dress
  • a vintage travel trunk or picnic basket secured to the luggage rack
  • not a care in the world
  • most likely a Reverso on my wrist

The Travel Dream
My wife and I dream of annual international travel when we're both retired. While it's totally doable, it falls into the daydream category because we'll most likely never be empty nesters with the ability to travel as freely as we'd like, and we won't have the money to pull off some of this:
  • traveling for a month or more at a time
  • regular visits to exotic locales - Morocco, Egypt, (back to) Istanbul, India
  • regular trips to Burgundy multiple times a year, ideally staying in the place we've purchased for ourselves and reconnecting with the local friends we've made (this daydream involves being fluent in French, by the way)
  • in general, traveling to experience the spirit of the place, not as a tourist seeing the sites
  • a vintage world timer on my wrist from the golden age of travel

How weird.
My daydream watches are worn in a simple scenario. Warm sun, t-shirt (to show off the suntanned arms and wrist wear of course), and worn-in jeans.
But here’s the bit I didn’t realise until you specifically asked the question. My legs work properly in my scenario and I’m off walking miles in the sun winding the rotor on my daydream watch. Yep - that’ll do, thanks for asking.

(No intention of being maudlin- it was just strange to realise my daydream just because you asked specifically...)

For me it is a watch that catches my eye and sticks in my head. I can see it scratching a particular itch but will most likely not pull the trigger. Other times it is something that I would get if money was no object. A real dream watch so to speak.

Andrew, your daydreams sound so wonderful that I can easily visualise you in them. A very sound, civilised and restrained choice of watches too, if I may make so bold.

I’ve searched my posts on the daydreaming thread. I’ve not added much on there at all and have gone on to own one of them. I don’t believe in posting only unobtainable watches on there, to me it’s a case of “I like that, I think I’ll tell others about it”

We have the CWOTD and the NCWOTD, I see the daydream thread as more of a “Here’s a nice watch I don’t own that I’d like to share with you... of the day” thread.

^^^ Like I said earlier, YMMV – and it was just a silly question anyway. I’m just a fantasist really; my feet and my head inhabit different universes.

Our differing thoughts on the workings of this thread probably reflect our personalities which I can pick up on through out chosen careers.

You have taught languages and have a flair for creative writing, so I would expect you to approach this from a more artistic angle.

I’m an engineer so deal with logic and rationale thought, so it’s no surprise I’ve stripped my thought process back and approached it from a logical point of view.

Nothing wrong with either way, but it’s interesting when you consider how we all think differently in approach our to many things.

Excellent summation of what makes the forum a fascinating place. A common interest approached from very different angles.

My father worked with machines and tools all his life, and I think he was a little disappointed at first when I showed little aptitude for, or interest in maths, science and technology. Sadly he became ill and died during my time at university, but I knew that he had accepted my choices and was proud of what I was doing.

Actually, I'm fascinated by aspects of science, especially astronomy, space exploration and - of course - horology. I have a good layman's knowledge of the theories but very few practical skills. My uncle was a mechanic and tried to teach me how to tinker with my first car. He soon gave up!

Do you think these life/career choices are reflected in our watches? For example, I'd pick a Cartier over a Bremont any day - I suspect you probably wouldn't.
