Re: What do you run
Well I work in IT and while I know of the Debian Linux version I don't know all the variations. Mind you I do try and avoid Linux where possible.
IT is like cars in a way. Years ago if you had a car you pretty well had to know how to service and fix it. Now you just need to know how to drive and take it to the garage. It is like that now. As long as you know how to use the applications that you need to know you don't need to know the rest.

Yes, contrary to how it seems, I'm not really a techie; I'm just good at following instructions.ianblyth wrote:Well I work in IT and while I know of the Debian Linux version I don't know all the variations. Mind you I do try and avoid Linux where possible.

Nowadays, Linux OSes are very easy to install on a PC - you're probably done in 20 mins and the initial time it took you to download the whole OS and burn it onto DVD/USB stick - and come packaged with a lot of the programs and applications you need, like media players, office productivity programs, browsers, Flash, and PDF readers (unless you choose a minimalistic Linux version or one that avoids proprietary programs). So you don't have to spend additional time installing yet more programs.
In comparison, most people have to do that with a fresh installation of Windows. I think most people will add a firewall, anti-virus, Firefox/Chrome, VLC, Adobe reader and Flash, Openoffice or Libreoffice if you don't have Microsoft Office pre-installed.
Since I'm not a gamer and do very run-of-the-mill stuff on my computer, the prepackaged programs are usually more than enough for me.

Re: What do you run
I keep meaning to try a new Debian-based OS, particularly one which still uses GNOME. The new ubuntu seems a bit... "trendy" / "trying to be different"... So which should I try?*asqwerth wrote:I have a few Linux distros on my computer, but the 2 I use the most are Mepis and Parsix, which are both Debian-based.
*Context: I, like you, am not especially geeky but I can follow instructions / search fora and do some very minor coding and typing of "sudo make me a sandwich" as required and just want to do basic stuff but have control.
P.S.

Nope, might as well be Swahili to me.:....JAG wrote:If anyone is pi**ed off with buying anti-virus software and also the bloated stuff that comes with windows you may want to partition your Machines and run Windows on 1 part linux on the other "LINUX INSTALLERS DO IT FOR YOU" and try linux/ubuntu out. I have had a lot of my friends ask me to install ubuntu on there laptops and netbooks so they can get used to it ! as open source is the way to go it,s free Reasonably easy to use and is now run on a lot of tablet pc,s as it's Licence free
