At least we haven’t had any replies along the following lines…

I have now come to terms that the AD insisted on removing the stickers and adjusting the bracelet before I left the shop. Once at home I put the watch away. A quick enquiry to a grey dealer established that I could make a small premium by selling immediately. Fortunately I didn’t need to do this to clear the credit card, as I had bought the watch with funds, from the sale of an unworn watch I bought a year ago.

In about 12 months time I will remove the watch from storage and after establishing the average grey dealer buy in and resale prices will initially list for sale on a watch forum…

“For sale is my unworn Xxxxx. The bracelet was adjusted when I bought it, but after a while I realised that I wasn’t bonding with the watch and I invariably pick up my Zxxxx or Yxxxx instead.

These are still difficult to get hold of at ADs, so how does £xxk sound?”

I prefer not to look too closely at the three facebook groups in the post CW Clearance period. I could swear - but I won't - that in the past week I saw a thread which ran along the lines of "I bought model X in the sale, CW actually sent me a different watch model Y and I can't or won't send it back because I've already made a good little profit (before fees) on EBay". My recollection is that a subsequent question about "the original sale purchaser of watch model Y" was going unanswered.

I saw that discussion and to be fair to the Facebook group in question I don’t think it was one of the members that sold the watch they didn’t buy.

They had seen it for sale on eBay and challenged the seller but didn’t get the response you would have hoped.

I usually know within minutes of taking it out of the box whether or not it's a keeper, at least for the short term. Weirdly though, it's seldom worn straight away. Reason being that unless its a beater, the watch won't be a daily wearer so it gets wound and put in the watch box for the right occassion.

The madness behind this is that a beater can get scratched, scuffed, knocked about, etc. That's its job and that's why I wear it, and I'm always wearing a watch. I'd blow a fuse if I bought a new watch, wore it and within a few days or weeks, it got marked, no matter how superficial. Yes, it's impossible to keep watches pristine but the likelihood of if being kept pristine is much higher when out and about, going to work, driving, functions etc., than it is wearing it around the house and patching network cables, doing DIY, clearing out the sheds etc.

^^^^ My understanding too Iain.

The recipient of the wrong watch, who sold it on eBay was not a CWE Group member.

There is a CWE member who is hoping that it is not the watch that he bought and is yet to receive, and there were two members (one of whom being the originator of the thread) who enquired about, but did not buy, it as there were unanswered questions over the legitimacy, serial number and warranty card.

I’m going to buck the trend just a little bit. I have some unworn watches, ones I’ve had now for over a year. Two of them were bought for the deal that they were at the time. Others bought as future gifts for others. There are also a couple I got for myself as a hedge against future hypo-new-watch-iphoria when I feel like having something new, but not spend a penny on it at that time. ;) I’ve sold two to people looking for for these specific watches.it could happen again.

Most of my collection is pre owned so I wear it as soon as it arrives but I am fairly gentle with my nice mechanical watches so they tend to survive without scratches. I even wear my grail (C9 ME109) a couple of times a month for flyer Fridays but they need to be office days not delivering / on the tools days.

I have a small stack of straps and clasps to keep the "hypo-new-watch-iphoria" at bay and just mix them up when I want or need a new look.
