Watches that have haunted you?

Post by Amor Vincit Omnia »

Ghost watches in a sense...in another sense, regrets. The ones you can never quite get out of your head.

These fall into two categories for me: the ones you sold and wish you hadn't; and the ones you never bought and wish you had.

There were two CWs that I sold quite early on and always regretted. Fortunately, I managed to buy very nice examples of both watches on the forum a few years down the line. They are, of course, the C70 DBR1 and the gold C5 Mk1.

The rest haven't bothered me, CW or not, apart from the Nomos Tangente: silly boy! :datz:

Image

Of the second category, the CW that I didn't buy at first, and ignored when it was in SC last year, is the C9 5-day (SH21) Small Seconds.

Image

The other one is perhaps more of an oddity. It's the Eterna Kon-Tiki Four-Hands with the black dial and green details. I tried it on years ago, didn't buy it, and it keeps on coming back to haunt me.

Image

There's just something about the Kon-Tiki, and this one in particular, that just won't let go of me. I felt it this morning as soon as I went to put on my vintage Kon-Tiki.

The Moonwatch haunted me too, but not in the same way, and in any case I eventually bought one.

Do you have any watches that haunt you in this way?

I saw that C9, 5day PR, in the sales corner too. I looked long and hard at that; I've got a huge tinkering for a Roman numeral dial. I just need something that would look equally at home with jeans and a T-shirt, which funnily enough I think that would have. So, not haunted by anything to date; long may that remain the case...

No regrets re any that I have sold.

However looking back, many regrets re watches that I had on my wrist, but didn’t follow through and purchase.

One of my top five biggest regrets being:
FB8B5EB1-0226-416F-A903-FA30A8484A78.jpeg
I tried on this for the first time in about 2014. Preowned and discontinued, but just had an OEM service. However couldn’t bring myself to spend the amount required. About 6-12 months later the same watch had been moved to the preowned selection of a different store in the group. Tried on again, but as Mrs nbg and I were on a weekend away and I was running late in meeting up, I passed again. It was subsequently sold, before I got around to asking our local store to have it sent back to them.

Fast forward to 2019 I saw it online at another reputable dealer. Thought about it, but by that stage had more than enough rather nice dive watches. I do wonder how much I would have saved had I just bought the Fifty Fathoms the first time I saw it.

I came close to selling my C11, but I think that would have haunted me.......

I often wished I'd bought one of these back in the 90s - I could have managed on one kidney.....Maybe if I ever get to retire?

Nearly ordered an Omega Moon watch, brand new on bracelet, for £2600 in a sale back in 2017. I saw it just before we left for a shopping trip out. Dithered and mentioned it to the wife whilst on the motorway. She said to buy it, so when we got off the motorway, I checked back and it had gone. Now they’re £4k +.

This may not be quite what Steve intended with this thread, as this is neither a watch I had and moved on nor one I passed up, but I am haunted by the the JLC Reverso that I desperately would love to own but know that I never will. And if, by some miracle of miracles, I ever came to own a Reverso, I would then be haunted...paralyzed...by fears of actually wearing such an expensive time piece.

And I’m not just throwing this out there to join in the thread discussion. I really am haunted by the Reverso!

I have owned and sold some great watches but somehow this is the one I regret perhaps the most, and I have never seen one since (please let me know if you do)

So I went to buy a watch, and the man in the shop said "Analogue." I said "No, just a watch."

Thanks, Mark - I had already seen that but appreciate the heads up - very good of you.

I'm sleeping on it.

I think I have bought and sold a Strela chronograph about 3 or 4 times. I have one now I probably paid too much for especially as when I was selling my last one the were going for about £250.

I do regret not buying a Tudor submariner when I first got into watches. I remember one coming up for sale for about £700 and the seller couldnt give the thing away. I can remember looking at it thinking "Looks a bit worse for wear that, can see why its not selling"

Sold a Tudor datejust for about £500 a few years back too

Interesting one this. I am not really haunted bu too many that I sold but I do regret a few I suppose. The biggest clanger dropped was letting go my zenith 1969 el primero. I do wish I still had that to fill the chronograph hole.
I am also somewhat haunted by the fact I let my two subs go when I did. Not because I miss them as I prefer the 58 but they would be worth more now.
As far as ones I should have bought but didnt... Cant think of too many as once I have something in my head I usually find a way
For sale, samsung active2
Cheers now, Paul
