Samsung all the way. With a soundbar unless it's going to be connected to a sound system.
As for 4K, it's not necessary now (although your XBox One S supports it), but if you plan on keeping the TV for more than a few years it will probably become more common. If the price difference is not too much, and doesn't break the budget, I'd say go with the 4K. Unlike 3D, 4K is here to stay. Curved screens are a personal preference, but I've never liked them. I don't think they hold any value, unless you are sitting quite close to the screen, which does not seem to be the case for you.

Consider the weight of the TV.

Sony Bravia are way heavier than many others as the have a stout internal metal frame and heavy glass screens.

One benefit of a <50" TV is your house contents insurance should be lower. Insurance companies rate them as less stealable!

I wouldn't go with anything that isn't OLED. Worth paying the premium for the inky blacks of OLED over the washed out greys of an LED.

Oh, and I wouldn't pay anything extra for 4k which is a complete scam since the TV companies have to find the Next Big Thing persuade us all to upgrade.

Best to go to your nearest Curry's Megastore / Richer Sounds / John Lewis to see a load of TV's in one place and then look online to find the best price that either Richer or JL will price match.

I have a 32" Samsung, which has been excellent. Remember smaller screens also have a better picture than bigger screens with the same technology. Why spend a fortune on a big TV that'll dominate your room! Also don't fall for paying a lot for the latest tech - there's very little difference - they just want your money!

And the money saved can be put into your watch funds :)

It all depends on how close you sit. At one or two feet, the small screen is better as it has the same number of pixels in a smaller area. Move further away however and the bigger screen is far better than the smaller one.

As for technology, smart, 4k, wireless, arc, etc are pretty much standard now and it would be foolish to buy one without these.

I disagree.

Since the TV Manufacturers & Broadcasters experimented and dropped 3D; 4K is the evolution and IMHO is here to stay.

With the adoption of larger TVs the upgrade to 4K is required to maintain picture quality; in the same way that we all went to HD when screen sizes evolved above 32".

Coverage of Formula 1 is being recorded / broadcast in 4K this year.

Depends on what you can perceive and where you sit and how big the TV is. There is a nice geeky spreadsheet here that does all the work for you:

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/ ... edit#gid=0

Not much difference for us as we sit a good 3m away from a 55" OLED so the premium that 4K TV's attract over standard HD on the same size display is a waste for our room. Generally, the larger the screen, the more attractive that 4K is for the reasons you gave. As Mark78 is only looking around 50", I reckon the savings on a standard HD over a 4K would be better spent on something else to improve the overall experience like a decent soundbar or progammable remote.

Oh, and we *love* 3D

I would disagree, as most of these TVs now have YouTube and netflix built in and there's lots of 4k content on there.

Agreed that 4k is unnecessary unless your tv is going to take up your entire field of vision (or close to it). Assuming you sit an average distance away from the screen you'd probably need 60" at a minimum to notice any difference.

That said, there really isn't much difference in price at the minute so probably worth getting it as it's likely to be more top of the line with other specs than a non-4k tv

Resurrecting an old thread.

Chances are we going to upgrade our Sky HD box in the coming weeks to Sky Q 2TB (ultra HD) and a new TV is likely to follow.
Came across quite a few deals at our local Costco yesterday and the stand-out deal was on a Hi-Sense.

Any thoughts on this brand? It seems a lot of TV for the money. Only observation was the viewing angle wasn't great, but not really an issue for us as we tend to sit in front of and not to the side of it.

I'm only looking at buying from Costco, due to the guarantee and that we can use the TV for up to 90 days and if we don't like it they offer a no quibble return, so just looking for feedback on the Hisense brand and if any of the others below are a better buy.

Other TV's under consideration are:

Sony KD55XF7003BU @ £683.98
Hisense H55N6800 @ £575.98
HiSense H65A6200 @ £683.98
Panasonic TX-49FX650B @ £599.98
Toshiba 55U7763DB @ £467.98

I almost went for a Hisense when we bought a new TV for the kitchen.

Went for an LG in the end as the smart aspect of the TV had better reviews. More frequent updates, better content etc.
I'd guess that this has all been improved upon in the last 1.5 years.

For me, the smart stuff was a pretty important factor as my older Philips "smart" TV in the living room is shocking. Hardly any updates, rubbish apps and slow to navigate.
It really does get quite frustrating.

I have a Hisense.
And I regret it, it's great for sport etc, and the built in features like Netflix and YouTube are fab.
But when things go dark, in movies like Aliens, the blacks are awful and pixelated. There are limited display tweaking options.
Also the built in freeview EPG is terrible.
