I have fond memories of driving with him and being allowed to move the 'overdrive' switch (in the top of the gear-stick) to feel the surge of power (it was probably not that powerful!). The switch was similar to this:

Wonder what happened to the concept of "overdrive"...
We also had a couple of P6 3500 V8 Rovers and a Daimler mk2 2.8L straight 6 (again, memory is a bit wooly on the accuracy) and a 1980 slab front Granada estate with the 3L engine and a bonnet the size of a large dinner table.
This might explain where i got my interest in slightly oddball cars over the years
