^^^ whilst I haven’t seen that particular obelisk, I have seen what is believed to be the other one of that pair (no elephant), on a typical tourist trip, from the resort that we were staying in. :)

Again, Neil got this one quite quickly. It’s the smallest ancient Egyptian obelisk currently in Rome. Its supposed twin is in the city of Urbino. The elephant was sculpted by Bernini, the renowned baroque figure who had a great influence in Rome.

As to the goddesses, the Romans had a habit of linking their own deities with those of countries they assimilated into the empire. The goddess Minerva was linked most famously to Athena in Greece but also to Isis in Egypt and Sulis in Britain. The shrine of Sulis-Minerva is of course in Aquae Sulis, better known as Bath.

The statue and obelisk are in the Piazza della Minerva, in front of the church of Santa Maria Sopra Minerva (sopra = above). As you can see, the Dominican Friary church is dated 1590 and is built over what was thought to be a temple of Minerva, though some scholars consider that it was the temple of Isis.

Here endeth the ancient history lesson.

Sorry, been busy for a few days and am again today. This thread needs some time to think things through, so while I’ve been busy on the thread for the first part of the weekend, I’ve not had chance yesterday and might not until later.

I’m enjoying it though. It’s more than a quick “post a comment and move on thread” so I wouldn’t worry It’d become an extinct thread so soon.

Having said that, once again I haven’t got a clue from the first look at the latest picture and I may need some help again with this one.

So far all I’ve got from the picture is that the boat moorings on the river side look like they are no longer used for commercial reasons as the buildings behind look to no longer be dockside offices? I suspect pleasure craft uses these now so it’s a city with a tourism industry and by the looks of it, quite a wide river.

The balloon in an interesting addition. Most balloon flights tend to take place at dawn as the winds are often lower. The clock shows 3.45am (assuming it’s correct) so for the sun to be coming up it’s got to be quite a northern city.

I’m thinking Scandinavia or somewhere near the Baltic Sea?

Good detective work there Iain.

There's a National(?) flag flying to the left of the tower. Tri-colour, vertically, in yellow, white and ?? with a black crest of some description.

That rules out Denmark, Sweden, Finland and Poland (Baltic countries) leaving Latvia, and one other - that I can't recall and don't want to resort to external research.

Taking a guess; Tallin.

PS> I've taken another look at the flag; hard to see on my phone's screen.

Maybe it's Red/yellow/??.

I’ve no idea what the flag is, but it is certainly not the flag of the country. The church is not the city’s Cathedral, either.

I think I’ve found it. I know I said I was busy but I’ve had 15min while the family get dressed to get on google images and search Scandinavian city’s for something that looks like the church in the picture.
