I was listening to an episode of Planet Money on the way into work this morning. The episode was honing in on marketing and sales. At 19 minutes there is a woman recounting her ordeal to get a Hermès Birkin handbag. I think everyone on this forum will recognize the process right away.

The Same Old Game
Life is not a matter of holding good cards, but sometimes, playing a poor hand well.

Re: The Same Old Game
I saw a thread somewhere, may have been here or watchuseek, mentioning that Hermes wasn't quite the same as Rolex.
Then I looked at eBay listings for xupesboutique
They normally have a lot of watches, but they only have two watches listed. However their top handbag is a Birkin at £90000. In general unbelievable prices, you would have thought.
Probably different bags, but shopprestigem.com (online sales of James, of posh pawn on TV) has bags up to £30000.(and watches up to £70000).

Although not quite the same, there are similarities - and the phrase "may I direct you to the reply given in Arkell vs Pressdram" is one I often use - especially with lawyers who immediately know what I meanAmor Vincit Omnia wrote: ↑Thu Aug 03, 2023 5:05 pm As Lady Bracknell famously said:

Re: The Same Old Game
Interesting to hear the advertiser saying ‘well it’s you who have the soft spot - that’s on you. So what we’re doing is just providing a service... ‘
Or rather ‘we’re holding you in a relationship you walked into but don’t want to be in and making you grateful to us for doing it’...
I’d never sign up for that. In watches or handbags. Then again, Wednesday’s experience of all of a sudden being part of a family where other women stop to chat and talk about their bags seems very much like the experience of owning a greyhound. Though I’m sure I’ve missed a subtle difference somewhere

Re: The Same Old Game
I struggle to fully mesh with And Just Like That, but one of the episodes of the new series dealt with a woman who was robbed, and was happy to lose all her money, but wanted her Birkin back.
I've watched a fair bit of SATC, but the new stuff has lost something.

All the watches that used to be on Xupes.com are now on Chrono24 being sold by Chrono24 UK; they are sister Companies operating from the same address outside of Bishops Stortford, Essex (I visited them a couple of weeks ago, a very impressive setup).JAFO wrote: ↑Thu Aug 03, 2023 4:44 pm I saw a thread somewhere, may have been here or watchuseek, mentioning that Hermes wasn't quite the same as Rolex.

Thanks for that. I bought a watch from them at a reasonable price which they sold by auction rather than a buy it now fixed price. Excellent service and presentation.Bahnstormer_vRS wrote: ↑Tue Aug 08, 2023 11:31 pmAll the watches that used to be on Xupes.com are now on Chrono24 being sold by Chrono24 UK; they are sister Companies operating from the same address outside of Bishops Stortford, Essex (I visited them a couple of weeks ago, a very impressive setup).JAFO wrote: ↑Thu Aug 03, 2023 4:44 pm I saw a thread somewhere, may have been here or watchuseek, mentioning that Hermes wasn't quite the same as Rolex.
