I don't mind the Olympics as such but I really dislike the medals table. It's really just a show of how big and mighty countries think they are. "Ooohhh, look how good we are. All that money we spent on training and facilities bought us all those medals!".

I agree. And it’s great to see countries like San Marino and the Bahamas win medals.

Amateur rider, no sponsor (which was probably an advantage as she built the exact bike she wanted, not what the sponsor offered), no coach, has a full time job. Won the gold medal with a strategy that no coach would have ever recommended or supported. THAT is the true spirit of the Olympics.
I agree. Her performance and gold medal win was absolutely remarkable. It's stories like that which really make the Olympics special.

Anyone see the Women's Freestyle BMX last night? I've never seen it before, but the runs of the Hannah Roberts (USA) and the Charlotte Worthington (GB&NI) were jaw-droppingly impressive. If you haven't seen it, watch the highlights, you won't regret it.

^^^ Watched it this morning, Steve. I prefer the racing for reasons stated earlier, but I agree it was incredible!

Agree! Amazing to watch Charlotte Worthington ‘in the zone’. Made it look like magic. As did Max Whitlock on the pommel horse. Fantastic experience to watch someone at the top of their game - and then some
watching you fail in your quest for a “one watch” has been great entertainment

Did anyone see the mixed relay in the swimming? Fantastic last leg by the British freestyler. So unusual to see massive leads eaten away.

That seemed the best. The commentators were talking about a jump-off. How would they do that? Lower the height?

Absolutely ridiculous! Sport is winning/losing, agony/ecstasy etc.. - there can only be one winner. Giving 2 golds goes against what competition is about. Sorry to all those who think it’s brilliant but I think it’s a joke. That should have been one of the most exciting, edge of your seat, moments of the games - seeing those 2 battle it out for gold in a sudden death situation. That’s what sport is about.

How would they do a sudden death? Lower the bar and jump until there was a failure?

It’s written, quite clearly, in the rules on the World Athletics association website. Only if they are tied after this should it be shared, following consultation with the athletes/referees

“If competitors are.. tied, the winner will have had the fewest failures across the entire competition. Thereafter, a jump-off will decide the winner. The jump-off will start at the next greater height. Each jumper has one attempt and the bar is lowered and raised until one jumper succeeds at one height.”

Should England and New Zealand have shared the cricket World Cup as scores were tied after the super over? No, there can only be one winner so boundary count came into play. Harsh, but that’s sport. Should England/Italy have shared the Euro’s because it was all square following extra time? No, penalties decide - If it had have still been all square after the 5 penalties it goes to sudden death. Again a harsh way to lose but, that’s sport.

Good day so far. Britannia seems to be making a reasonable attempt to rule the waves again. And wow – those cycling girls! GBR and GER swapping world records! It looks like being a good final no matter who wins.

One of the best track world records ever - the Norwegian Karsten Warholm in the 400m hurdles, beat his own record by about 0.8 seconds.
