In the US we say steeping or brewing.
The Non-Curmudgeons Corner
Re: The Non-Curmudgeons Corner
No. Tea is a northern English term for dinner.
Dinner to me is actually what you would call lunch.
You are of course correct if referring to the drink.

And here I thought I was making a cheap joke. That’s pretty fascinating. Never heard tea as a term for dinner. I’m familiar with the dinner vs lunch and dinner vs supper differences.

Northern? I have no familial connection to the North and grew up having tea as my last meal of the day

Meal taken in the middle of the day? Luncheon, lunch or dinner?

At school you had dinner money, for school dinners. Then you went home for tea. Egg and chips, sausage and chips, fish fingers and chips.

And then there’s afternoon tea. A bridge between Dinner & tea.
So….we have breakfast, elevenses, dinner, afternoon tea, tea and supper. I’m just amazed that I can still find room for snacks!

And if you weren't served by dinner ladies at lunchtime you'd probably have brought your food in your lunch box. Confusing all round.

Brunch is an abomination, a b*st*rdization of proper meals. Eat breakfast or eat lunch (or dinner, in Iain’s case) or go home!

I think its a late breakfast or an early lunch.. unless you have it between eating breakfast and lunch (dinner) in which case you're very full indeed
