My favourite Phil Collins song for tonight.

And here’s one that Genesis recorded on the album “We Can’t Dance”. Collins wrote it along with Tony Banks and Mike Rutherford on hearing of the death of Eric Clapton’s young son Connor.

This thread keeps on giving!

Today, I was reflecting that when we think about "beautiful" songs, we tend to gravitate towards sad ones, so I set myself the challenge of coming up with some beautiful songs that are happy or uplifting, and possibly upbeat too. Here are some that really do perk me up when I hear them. Apologies for providing a batch of them, but I really couldn't cut them down any further! Hopefully, I've also managed to address the request for a bit more soul too.

Bill Withers - Lovely Day

Nina Simone - Feeling Good

I also really like this Nina Simone song, Ain't Got No - I Got Life, for its joyous outlook in times of adversity:

And a more modern feel-good song that takes me back to when I was young and carefree in my 20s:

Supergrass - Alright

And finally, a great positive song from the 1980s, You Make My Dreams (Come True) by Daryl Hall & John Oates, but given a new lease of life by its humorous use in the 2009 film 500 Days of Summer. I'm sure a lot of us could relate to this when we were young! ;)

Of course we all have our own idea of what is beautiful, and some wonderful songs have been suggested so far, none more so than Andrew's suggestion of Bring Him Home from Les Miserables.

I've seen the occasional Musical over the years but my Girlfriend / Partner is a West End Musical fan and she introduced me to Les Miserables. Every time I hear Bring Him Home, pretty much regardless of who sings it, it gives me goosebumps, and I sing along the my best baritone / bass voice I can muster.

I was discussing this thread with my Girlfriend / Partner this morning and related the inclusion of the Colm Wilkinson version of 'Bring Him Home'. This, to her, is the absolute best version of that song; although she will admit to having a soft spot for any rendition by Alfie Boe.

As to her 'most beautiful song' is was a simple, straight choice of the theme tune to Schindler's List.

Beautiful indeed. I’m glad John Williams was brought into the thread. He is the MASTER of beautiful orchestral compositions. I’m not sure any one person has impacted the cinematic world more than him in the last 50 years.

He created the theme music for Schindler’s List, Star Wars, E.T., Indiana Jones, Harry Potter, Jurassic Park, Jaws, among many many more. Dozens of absolutely iconic and instantly recognizable themes. I mean…. Come on!

It's probably about time that Alison Krauss appeared in this thread. Her voice is angelic. I mean, like, stop-you-in-your-tracks beautiful.

She has sung many beautiful songs, but Simple Love has had a lot of poignancy for me recently. And I really like this video, which includes a lot of footage of her father and Alison as a girl:

There's been some great stuff here :)

I'll throw up a couple of gems. And a "second that!" for Joni Mitchell's Amelia. Wonderful.

Diana Krall already on this list but "Departure Bay" off The Girl in the Other Room slays me EVERY time.
Louis Armstrong's What a Wonderful World HAS to be on this list.
And for something completely different, Kraftwerk's The Model.

I’m back with more songs that have come to mind…

I’m a huge Led Zeppelin fan, and while not my favorite Zeppelin song, The Rain Song is definitely the most beautiful. In this case, made more so by the amazing voice of Anne Wilson. The guitar work in this represents Jimmy Page at his best.

I’m also a huge Who fan. Pete Townsend is probably a more amazing songwriter than he is a guitarist, and that says a lot. I’ve always preferred his interpretation of Behind Blue Eyes to Roger Daltry’s. It’s a different song when Pete sings it. Just beautiful.

And finally, another Who song, but covered by Pearl Jam. I really don’t know what to say about it. It’s beautiful, the song and this rendition in particular.

Ps we need more Soul and Funk fans on the forum 8)
Here I am ! !

Loads of my mates still call me a Soul Boy when describing my musical taste. It was hard to be anything else being at school in the late sixties with somebody whose sister worked for Atlantic and STAX Records. We listened to LPs from so many of the Soul artists of that era (Otis Redding, Aretha Franklin etc) and all the clubs played Soul and Motown. I've never lost my love for that music. Then into the late 70s/80s with the Soul/Funk music being played in all the East London pubs and Robbie Vincent on the radio.

I'm going with an LP that was released over 50 years ago (1971) that has more on it than the 1 song linked below. The words in 3 or more of the tracks tell just how little this world and we have changed in 50 years - we are still messing it up (I hope that not considered a political comment).

If you don't know this LP from first time around please find it and listen to all the tracks. Marvin Gaye - What's Going On.

(Sorry if I haven't created the link totally correctly - Old technophobe).

Agreed......for me, this song says it all.

Maybe not the most beautiful song, but I have always found it hauntingly mesmerizing. Especially this live version.

Good man Mikkei

There’s a whole list of soul and funk we can add here. Jazz Funk is still forefront for me but I’ve recently hit a rich vain of excellent soul songs too. KTF

The thread is starting to look a bit messy.

Do you think we can avoid quoting whole posts including YT links, please?

Thanks, rant over! :D
