The Lottery Watch Game

Post by Amor Vincit Omnia »

Time for a game, I think. We haven’t done one for a while, though we have done something vaguely similar before.

Imagine that I have won an undisclosed but substantial sum on the lottery (having actually bought a ticket). I’m going to buy a watch to celebrate my good fortune and you have to pick it for me. No other rules, but try to respect what you know about my tastes in watches (this is part of the game – how well do you know your forum friends?). I would prefer you to focus on something I would feel comfortable to wear out and about without taking a armed guards regiment with me. But if you insist on picking a £1 million Patek or a 20 quid Casio, fair enough.

I will pick the one I like best in a day or so, depending on how many suggestions we get, and whoever suggested it gets to be the next lucky winner of the lottery. Und so weiter…

Enough blether from me, get posting – and illustrative pics would be most welcome!

The Lottery Watch Game

Post by gaf1958 »

I was thinking something along the lines of one of these Steve, a selection of GP Vintage 1945 models, blue dial, gold case and (my favourite) a big date white moon phase respectively. Spoilt for choice. :)

It’s about time Steve stopped kidding us and admitted that he’d sell a kidney for a VC perpetual calendar :D

I’m sure as a man of elegance and good taste, you would be drawn to something more understated and classic looking. Not one to flaunt your new found wealth means you’d also probably stay away from anything made from precious metals.

I have opted to select the limited edition Nomos Ludwig for you to spend your money on. I did look at the date version but felt the no date at 38.5mm was probably a better size for you. You’ve also mentioned a few times recently about your regret at selling your last Nomos so I think this will be a welcome addition to your collection.

I wanted to go with Calatrava. But this will do.

Ultra Thin. Understated. Vintage.

Did I get it or did I miss by mile?

Without knowing the price, which will certainly not be that small, this would be my suggestion for you:

Some fabulous watches so far, but there are two clear leaders. The others all have something that puts me off a little. I’ll explain fully in due course.

^^^ I was going to go for that one Ryan. You beat me to it.

I will go for something understated and tasteful.

Far less noticeable upon the wrist than an oversized shouty steel dive watch.

Robust, wear it anywhere. No one will notice it. Highly accurate compared to all the watches posted so far.

Seen in a range of settings from cocktail parties to active service in a war zone.

Brilliant idea!

I’m going to go with an vintage Cartier Santos. And by vintage, I mean a really early example. This example is from 1916. My only worry with suggesting this - too similar to your Tank?

A less controversial suggestion than my previous one. :)

I wasn’t regarding the Rolex as that controversial, Neil. I know I have my moments on “the thread” but I have always acknowledged that they make fine watches. That one, admittedly, isn’t quite my bag.

The Senator on the other hand is most definitely a candidate!
