The Definitive Nerd Thread

Post by jkbarnes »

After recent discussion about our interest in watches (or my obsession with hats!) making us nerds, I thought it might be funny to have a definitive discussion about the topic.

Heres the idea: post a photo that establishes your bonafides as a nerd. I’ll start.

I made a secret agent gadget control panel for my MX5.

One time I wanted a switch so I could choose to play music on my headphone amp or on my speakers, but I decided it had to match the rest of my setup. I had a steel plate custom milled and powder coated, then wired it up. Only cost like 10x what it would have cost me to buy a premade one.

And I make my own name plates for everything I build.

Can you come wire up my secret agent panel so that the buttons and switches actually do something?

Whaaaat! You're starting to scare me now, Andrew. There must be a dedicated forum for your types. Tread carefully my friend as you may find yourself on the end of Steve's magic hammer.

I get the smoke, oil, guns, and nails buttons, and the bullet proof screen.

But why do you need a plate spinner knob in your car?

And do you really need TWO Hokey Cokey switches? I assume the unmarked button is the one to shake it all about?

I was literally just copying the buttons from Bond’s Aston Martin DB5, with the positions modified a bit to fit the space.

So I guess Jameson and I are the only true nerds on this forum? Impossible!

i could do everything but the wiring on your secret panel, including engraving the labels right into the box.

right now is a great time, if you can decide quick (cuz they expect to sell out of them this weekend). they're selling refurbished Pros for the best price i've ever seen on a pro.

https://glowforge.com/b/glowforge-certified

still not cheap.

i bought mine way back during crowdfunding in march 2016 and didn't actually receive it until nov 2017.

the community on their forum is incredibly helpful.

Out of budget for now. I have a dream of starting a little woodworking business and justifying the glowforge as an expense for that, but I’m a few years out from having time to do much more than take care of kids and work.

Does understanding anything on this thread indicate nerdishness? If so I’m completely in the clear.
