States in America. Have I been had?

Post by smegwina »

Okey dokey.

Just seen on the headlines that Gay marriage has been ratified by the Supreme Court in all 50 States.......

Now, this is nothing to do with gay marriage......... (ain't opening that Pandoras box.... :D )

Now, I am an old Bugger with failing memory and increasingly common lapses into stupidity, but I distinctly remember being taught that there were 52 States.

Even when I was out there for a while, I do not really remember seeing anything that contradicted the 52. (Granted, I never really looked into it or asked about it!)

I have therefore looked it up and there are.....

50.

Never liking to be wrong, I rang the memsahib and she recalls being taught 52. Colleagues that I asked all said they recall there being 52!

So... is this a peculiarly English thing to give our yankie chums the extra credit of 2 states?

Have I just been educated in a vacuum????

I fall on the collective wisdom of the forumites to see if any one else recalls being taught 52?

I would also be intrigued if there are any other misconceptions such as this out there!

Be gentle with me!!

I can only conclude you have confused states in USA with weeks in a year.

I read the same story on the BBC website earlier.
At that time it said gay marriage was legal in 37 states.
Now it says that prior to today's ruling it was banned in 14 states!
As our American cousins might say, "Do the math!"

As it happens I had always thought there were 52 states before I actually went there. I've no idea where that number came from? I wonder if there is some psychological association going on?

Probably including Washington DC and Puerto Rico in the list of jurisdictions you are equating to / remembering as "states".

If they are commonly thought of as States, then that could be it!

I was told that the stars on the American flag represented each state and the stripes represented the colonies that declared independence from the British . :D

If I'd been asked, before reading this thread, 'How many States. . . ' I would have pleaded ignorance. #-o

Now I know the answer.

Thank you all. :silent:
