I’m broadly in agreement here, Brian. If GSTK is not used in Scotland or Wales, it probably shouldn’t be used in England either as a constituent country of the United Kingdom. I’ve always felt that and have a bit of a soft spot for Jerusalem and I Vow to Thee My Country, which of course is set to the Holst tune that has now become synonymous as a global rugby anthem since the 1991 RWC.

I think the pre-match formalities at the Aviva take much longer than anywhere else. Once the teams are out, they have the Presidential Salute, followed by the President meeting the teams and officials, the visiting anthem, Amhrán na bhFiann and finally Ireland’s Call.

Anyway, back to the rugby. Interesting game yesterday, and I thought England played well for most of it. A couple of brilliant tries from the Italians but, as the commentators and pundits said, they find it hard to keep going through the second half.

Next Saturday? I fully expect Ireland to come away with a bonus point win from Rome, which means that in order to keep the advantage England will need to do the same in Cardiff. Tall order against Wales on their own ground, I think they’re a wounded animal at the moment and could well hold a few dangers. The championship is almost certainly gone for either team unless Scotland can limit France to a losing bonus point…last tango in Paris. I don’t see that happening. After the pre-season discussion I think England would be perfectly happy with second place, which they might be able to achieve if they bring their best game.
