No, it would not normally be very sensible to rely on the Scotland team for a result, but today.... thanks! :D

Francis only 8 weeks for attempted gouging - lucky boy since the minimum tariff should start at 12 weeks.

Fair comment welshlad, corrected myself

It was hardly gouging. But definitely a daft and reckless thing to do, so he can have no complaints.

I actually err towards welshlad's view... and I'm English. Foul play that's been caught and punished but made to look much worse by the repeated super-slow motion replays we get these days. At full speed it was a stupid hand in the face incident that caught Cole more on the nose than anywhere near the eyes (IMHO of course). And let's not forget, it's a game played by men, not footballers   .

Not sure how rugby players raking their fingers across other players faces can be used as a stick to beat footballers with.

Was a clear red card offence (as agreed by the review committee), and was a very poor decision by the TMO at the time. He may not have made contact with his eyes (though it looks like he did), but it was a very real possibility and very reckless. Looking at it again it's clearly not just a hand in the face, it's a clear rake.

My point was that it wasn't gouging as such, ie he didn't press his fingers into Cole's eye sockets. But I agree he was a plank and if he'd got sent off I wouldn't have complained - well, only to him for being a berk for letting the team down.

Some annoyance at the player, although such behaviour is becoming commonplace in a game that used to be hard but fair. Equally annoyed at Marler and his sly punch which was uncalled for and rightly punished. My real annoyance is at the officials, you can't always blame the match ref although Joubert does seem, shall we say less competent than some others, but the TMO needs the sack asap for at least 2 and possibly 3 glaring errors during the match which shouldn't happen as that's what he's there for. Grow a pair and make a decision or get out, but don't bottle it when the heat is on.

Raking or not raking... emotional words, moot point, personal views, but I don't recall any vivid gouges or blood on Cole's face either then or in photographs of the incident. He rubbed his face for 15 to 20 seconds then looked at bit sheepish for his yellow card.

Using it to "beat footballers", especially Premiership ones... just banter. Speculating on how the average Premiership footballer of today would react to a similar incident. It probably would have required three physios, two stretchers and an ambulance on stand-by, until the triage team made sure there wasn't a hair out of place on his head and the laundry squad had ironed the creases out of his shirt and removed the mud from his brand new tatt's. After 15 minutes of palaver there would be confirmation and all round relief that he hadn't actually been injured in the first place but as a precaution would need three weeks away from the game to recover from the lack of trauma.

A jaded view of footballers ?.... me ?... of course !!
