My niece’s big floppy puppy. Not the brightest dog I’ve ever met but too sweet.

My lovely boy Neo went to the vets last week for an anaesthetic and to have his teeth done. It turned out to be a horrible experience. They had to take out ALL the little teeth in the front along the bottom row, and most of the little ones on the top row. Unfortunately it’s a part of life for many ex racing greyhounds. Neo‘S teeth were bad when I got him. I expected he might need a few teeth out - I just didn’t expect this.

It feels like Neo has been really traumatised by this. He’s showing a lot of signs of anxiety. I’m feeding him mostly by hand because he’s turning down food and needs encouragement. He’s much more guarded and fearful. We’ve spent 6 months building up trust and now I’m worried he’ll not trust me again :(

Don't forget that as dogs have no hands their mouth is their only grabber so if it's not working he's not going to be happy. Probably still hurts too having had all those teeth ripped out, and fighting gravity to pick up food from a bowl will mean pushing it against those sore gums while you pass it to him more horizontally so it wouldn't.

If he's happy to eat out of your hand his problem is not with you, give him a couple of weeks and all should be back to normal

^^^ agreed Lindsey. Youll maybe struggle getting him in to the vets again, but theres clearly a bond there and its rarely broken with dogs once its established. Youre stuck with the gummy fella for good I recon!

I'm so sorry to hear about Neo, Lindsey.

Its hard to imagine the trauma he's felt and the pain / discomfort he has been in. I'm sure though, in the long term, he will get over it, helped by the inevitable cuddles and TLC you will give him.

On a practical front, I'm not sure how much he would actually use his small front teeth for eating. Certainly Davie only seems to use them when delicately taking a small treat from my hand.

Also do you have his food / water bowls on the floor, or in a raised stand around 50cm - 70cm off the floor. Using the raised stand means he doesn't need to stoop down and also keeps his neck on a more even level.

Guy

PS> Davie sends his love (currently doing what greyhounds do best).

Thanks Guy :D
We’ve found that mushy food doesn’t help because he would normally use his front teeth to nip off little chunks of it. His usual pellets are easier to slurp back into the back of his mouth. Sometimes, though, a pellet escapes and falls out of his mouth through the gap in his teeth. Then I kind of feel like crying for him...
He does have a raised bowl.

I think you’re all right, though - he’ll get there. He didn’t play with his cuddly toys for a few days because he usually nips them with his front teeth when he’s doing zoomies round the living room. This evening he had a few practice runs and got pretty good at grabbing them on the run. The ones he missed for the gap in his teeth didn’t seem to bother him - he just went back for another try. It was good to see.

Zoomies? Lovely description. I can imagine it vividly. :D :D

Wonderful to hear that he seems to be on the mend.

Being bluntly objective; Neo is missing a few teeth. How many times have you seen a dog with only three legs and how they cope with that? They're more resilient than we perhaps give them credit for. He'll be fine.

So true Guy. It’s us humans who have an emotional response to things. Neo seems to be figuring out how to work with the new teethy arrangement, and he has some recovery to go yet before his anxiety settles. But we’ll get there.

Haha! You could be right - flea biting always looks so totally satisfying

Selfishly, for me, I’m sad that he’s lost his gorgeous goofy greyhound grin...
