Plantation Shutters made from Bass Wood
Congratulations Drew! From your past posts, I know this move has been years in the making & a dream realized! I can understand your frustrations with the educational system from your last years of teaching. Your new “happy place” looks fantastic & should serve its purpose well. There were a few things that I couldn’t help but notice that reveal some of your interests & personal tastes. The leather button chair does say that your wife has a great taste in furniture as that is a timeless design that will never go out of style. The same goes for your wooden plantation shutters. Apparently we share similar tastes & interests. My wife & I have similarly stained shutters for our home. While not cheap, they last a lifetime, are very functional & will never appear dated. I am attaching a picture of ours! While I didn’t pursue a career in teaching, I did earn a degree in history & have maintained a lifetime interest in the field. Looks like you have a particular interest in early colonial history & most definitely European history. I wish you the best with your well earned retirement & new home with your wife. Thanks for sharing with us!

UPDATE: I had to get this desk in here somehow. It was a gift from my father-in-law and had been his as a child. The space might be a bit more cramped now, but it’s worth it to have the desk in there.

We found that in an antique mall! It was exactly what I wanted for the space and it is insanely comfortable!

……My wife & I have similarly stained shutters for our home. While not cheap, they last a lifetime, are very functional & will never appear dated. I am attaching a picture of ours!
The shutters came with the house, and I love them! I only wish I could open the windows to get some breezes. I want to get matching wooden blinds put on the door for when I want more privacy. It’s a glass door.

…Looks like you have a particular interest in early colonial history & most definitely European history. I wish you the best with your well earned retirement & new home with your wife.
Most of the American history books are from my college days. And yes, a strong interest in European history!

Thank you for the very kind words!!

Those shutters remind me vaguely of the Honour boards in schools whereon were recorded in gilded letters the glorious achievements of fêted alumni in the Groves of Academia.

Probably not a road upon which you would be wont to perambulate.

Rustic Cherry Barrister’s Bookcase
Drew,

Thanks for the immediate feedback & thanks for adding the picture of the writing desk. Just another one of those items that are timeless in design & function. I am sensing that we share an interest in maps. I guess that cartography & the study of history does go hand in hand. While I lack your musical talent & guitar ownership, we are kindred spirits when it comes to books. I have three different bookcases in different parts of our house, but this barrister’s bookcase is my favorite. Just another one of those designs that never goes out of style & provides a lot of functionality, in my opinion. I think that your fitting the writing desk in is space well used & helps to make your room what you want it to be!

I’m a huge fan of barrister bookcases. I would love to have a wall of them, but that would have been prohibitively expensive! I settled for perfectly functional bookcases from IKEA.

As for maps, I love them. I had a wall of maps in my bedroom at the old place. No room for all of them here. The ones with special meaning made it up though.

Well, since you mentioned maps, here’s a run down of what I’ve got up.

IMG_2494.jpeg
This is a vintage school map that was a gift from my department. It covers one of my favorite figures (Henry II) and one of my favorite time periods, the Middle Ages

IMG_2495.jpeg
This map of Dijon was a gift from my wife. I was lucky enough to participate with numerous student exchanges with a Lycée in Dijon over the years. It’s one of my absolute favorite places.

IMG_2496.jpeg
My wife is born and raised on Cape Cod. I found this on the Cape one summer and had to get it! There’s also an old vintage map of the British Isles there and one of Shelter Isalnd, NY, where my grandparents lived.

IMG_2498.jpeg
A history professor friend of mine found this in a closet in his office and gave it to me. It’s Paris, and it’s in French! We moved it to the dining room after I got the Medieval France map.

IMG_2500.jpeg
I saw an original lithograph of this in an antique store for an absurd amount of money. These were commissioned by Air France in the 30s. I found a vendor on Etsy who would print it in a custom size.

Thanks so much for sharing some of your collection of maps! I had wondered earlier but could not make out for sure the one of Dijon. Now I know! The pull down map summons memories from my own educational experiences many years ago. I particularly like the style & sense of time period of the Air France rendering. The font, color tones & lithographic layout immediately point to the time period before the war changed so much across Europe. I agree, the barrister’s bookcases can be pricey. I was fortunate to find mine at half price in an Amish furniture store that was going out of business! Thanks again for sharing!

Before the moment passes, I do wish to ask a question. For some reason your map of Cape Cod made me think of this. Have you ever taken the ferry to Tangier Island in the middle of the Chesapeake? My wife & I did back in 2019 when as part of our Virginia trip, we explored the Northern Neck & stayed a night in Reedsville. Going to Tangier was like stepping back in time. That’s the funny thing about maps. They can take you to places that you have never been or back in time. Sorry for wandering off topic.
