Selling my collection?
Re: Selling my collection?
Having read the article Watches Worth The Most To Sell - http://www.forbes.com/sites/arieladams/ ... t-to-sell/ I guess my fortune is in the enjoyment I have in my collection. I salute all those who are brave enough to dabble in the market and move watches on.

Equally, to you, for building up such a high quality collection.Berkshire Critic wrote:I salute all those who are brave enough to dabble in the market and move watches on.
I've learnt that buying hastily doesn't bode well for a keeper. Sometimes. Like most I have a couple of watches that I have no intention of selling, and for me it's the pure enjoyment of wearing them, as well as the fact that they are appreciating in value. And I've a couple that may not survive long into next year unless I get the same level of enjoyment from wearing them.
This year I have sold one and given two away. And I do start to regret one of those. But I have gained five, and three of those are probably keepers.
So I wish I was James Bond, just for the day.

Re: Selling my collection?
Having never sold a watch in 20 years of collecting, I sold my first watch last week and have three more on e-bay this week. Many more to follow. It was either time to cull or hire a full time curator for the collection.

Re: Selling my collection?
I have never sold a watch, gave a couple of cheapies to a charity shop once though. Apart from one second hand cheapy this year I have not purchased a watch either, I must be unwell! Quite fancy a second edition Monster at the moment but it remains to be seen if I do anything about it!
As for selling well I have a Seiko 5 I never wear but it's not worth much and to much hassle to try and sell it really.

Re: Selling my collection?
I started collecting by selling!
I had sort of acquired a few watches over the years, and one day I realised that I never wore some of them.
I sold a Cartier on eBay for more than I've paid for any of my later watches, and with the money burning a hole in my pocket, I bought the BofB off eBay, then another, and another, and...
I tend to buy what I fancy at the time, I don't spend much on a watch, and if I later don't want to keep it, I move it on. My purchases are spur of the moment, my sales are just to keep the numbers down.

There's always time for one more.
Re: Selling my collection?
When I started collecting, I didn't really know what I wanted in the long term and I kept buying stuff simply on the basis of "that looks nice/interesting". Once I figured out a certain direction for my collection, I disposed of those watches that did not fit. E.g. if a collector finds he wishes to concentrate on pilot's watches, it makes little sense to bind funds by hanging on to those 60's dress watches bought a few years previously.
I have also sold in order to upgrade. A used watch might go to make place for the same make and model with box, or NOS. This is also a good excuse for spending money, I find -- deducting the sale price of the old piece from the purchase price of the new suddenly makes it look really quite, ahem, uncostly, a bargain, really.
I am also about to dispose of a couple of wristwatches on the grounds of old age -- mine rather than the watches . When I have to dig out my reading glasses just to decipher fiddly dials and small numbers, the watch really becomes little more than an annoyance.
