Re: Schools Removing Analogue Clocks
Blinking crazy.
I've two boys aged 7 and 9 both of whom can tell the time with an analogue watch.
In fact for his birthday the eldest got his first Seiko (ish).
My wife is a year 1 teacher and none of her kids (aged 6) can tell the time using analogue methods . I do worry about the future.

Re: Schools Removing Analogue Clocks
Wow ... It's almost unthinkable that a kid would struggle to read a clock!
I've started mine early, 3 1/2 and my boy is already running around the house in this ...
We also have a similar wall clock and this door front from IKEA in the playroom ...
My kids WILL read an analogue clock!!

You didn't read about the recent "once in a lifetime" (no doubt we'll get another one soon) Scottish Independence referendum where 16 year olds were in fact given the votenbg wrote:
It’s even worse really, as there are some who believe they should be allowed to vote at 16!

^^^ on first glance that Tikkers reminded me of a recent Omega LE.
I'm assuming my 17 yo son can read an analogue clock, I must ask him although he owns no watch and uses his phone to tell the time. If he can't I'm going to force him to learn! ( but I think he knows.)

Re: Schools Removing Analogue Clocks
It's unbelievable isn't it.
What is happening at the schools now? Kids come out not being able to read, can't do mental arithmetic, have no idea of English Grammar, mis-use "of" instead of "have", can't tell a "to" from a "too", "try and" do something rather than "try to" do something and now can't tell the time by an analogue clock face.
Perverse really as I've recently bought a new fitness watch where you can choose from numerous watch faces and I've chosen an analogue face despite 40 years of working in IT where everything was recorded in digital time.
Never mind, in the not too distant future we'll all have some sort of electronic chip inserted where you don't want it and it'll transmit a little voice to tell you the time whenever you or it thinks you need to know the time.

Re: Schools Removing Analogue Clocks
I just asked my wife, who works at a primary school if they use analogue clocks, thankfully they do and the children are fine with them.
When I look around people's homes for work, the walls ,
window sills and mantle pieces are full of them.
Where have these teenagers been, literally buried in their phones, I suspect.
My friend has a 13 year-old son and he believes, they are now struggling with writing, but typing can be done as quickly as you can speak. Scary..!!
Regards Steve

Re: Schools Removing Analogue Clocks
I blame the parents for not teaching these kids how to read a clock/watch before entering the first grade. This is ludicrous and the system in any country should stop enabling the students that have these issues and teach them how to tell time.

As ridiculous as this is, it's not really surprising. To me it's a natural evolution after stopping teaching cursive writing and arithmetic without calculators in school.

While at work, I asked a young lady to do something at a quarter past the hour and she thought I'd meant 25 minutes past.

Re: Schools Removing Analogue Clocks
Just done a straw poll of my mid to late 30s friends who are parents. They all pretty much agree that while it's fun teaching the use of a clock, they doubt it'll be useful later in life.

Re: Schools Removing Analogue Clocks
Both my kids (12 and know how to tell the time on a analogue watch/clock. My daughter goes to one of the most modern secondary schools in the region and all the clocks are analogue in it, ditto with my sons school. Mrs O is a teacher and she says all the clocks in her school are analogue. I have worked in council run primary and secondary school as well as a collage and I never say any digital clocks. No idea where the Torygraph is getting its facts from but its not Dumfries and Galloway.

Re: Schools Removing Analogue Clocks
Have you seen how they try and teach reading? It's all phonetic, at least at my niece's school. Phonetics require an additional 'letter' ch (there may be more) and when making simple words out of bricks for her to read you have to be careful that they actually work in their system. Madness! She likes watches though and will be getting a nice analog in due courseMikkei4 wrote:What is happening at the schools now? Kids come out not being able to read...
