Re: Arne Dahl And Other Scandinavian Crime Series

Post by Bahnstormer_vRS »

Slight bit of thread rejuvenation.

Having been watching the excellent 'The Young Montalbano' on BBC4 Saturday Evenings since the New Year; Sicilian Police/Crime series with wonderful Mediterranean scenery and sunshine, http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b06vn7q3 this has now finished and we've moved over to a dark, cold and icy Icelandic Police/Crime Thriller 'Trapped' with a double header last weekend.

Started off, Episode 1, in a small Icelandic fishing port, a ferry docks. That same day a dismembered body is found in the river, sparking an investigation and a call to Reykjavik for detective reinforcements to assist the small local police force. With the ferry held in dock and a bad snowstorm threatening to cut off the town, chief of police Andri is under pressure to deliver results quickly and continued,

Episode 2, with no police support able to arrive from Reykjavik until the snowstorm clears, Andri and his colleagues need to work fast. It seems a hopeless situation, but with a suspect in custody awaiting questioning and a body awaiting forensic tests, Andri is desperate for them to prove themselves and make a breakthrough in the case.

Further details available here;- http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b06xttds

I won't review it, other than to say its dark, cold and icy.

Well done Guy.

I was also enthralled with the first 2 episodes of 'Trapped."

So unusual to see Icelandic scenery on TV which at times was spectacular.

From above it looks eerily similar to the skin of a corpse

I've been enjoying Trapped too. Not as frenetic as The Bridge or The Killing, but just as compelling, although it took a couple of episodes to warm up. The first two were mainly shots of people's left eye, and cars driving through snow :?

Looking forward to the new Danish one tonight :D

Some great recommendations here, I enjoyed 'The Bridge' especially, and will investigate 'Trapped', as a fan of all things Icelandic.

Other Foreign shows I have thoroughly enjoyed in the past (but sorry, deviating from the Scandanavian theme):

- 'Braquo': brutal French Police/crime thriller about an elite but morally dubious squad of special agents in Paris. Everyone wears head-to-toe black leather, smokes furiously and has designer stubble. Even the women. Very noir.

- 'Romanzo Criminale': Italian crime saga about the rise to power of a young gang in 70's Rome, and their eventual downfall. Superbly acted, shot in grainy footage, terrific 70's / 80's set dressing and operatic in scale.

- 'Gomorrah': Italian Mafia/Camorra crime thriller (you're perhaps noting a theme here) set in modern-day Naples. It takes a little while to get going & draw you in, but it's supremely notable for being the ugliest, most realistic portrayal of gangsterism I've ever seen. Sometimes, even the scumbags in 'Goodfellas', 'The Sopranos' etc. have a glamorous allure (that's part of it I suppose), but this show details the sheer realistic immorality & horror of that life better than I've observed elsewhere.

Lastly, it's not actually in a Foreign language at all, but it's so mumbled, uncompromisingly written & slang-ridden that I needed subtitles at all times anyway - 'The Wire': the very best show I've watched, matched only by 'The Sopranos', or 'Band of Brothers' perhaps. Just an amazing achievement.

If you have Amazon prime video, season 1 has just been added to prime as well!!

I am re-visiting season 1 at the moment to get ready for season 2. I forgot how bloody good (and extremely violent!) it is.

Acquitted - Norway

Post by scooter »

Just watches episode 1 of Acquitted, a Norwegian crime thriller, which can be found on Channel 4 (On Demand).

It's part of the 'Walter Presents' series of dramas and looks set to be a winner.

All episodes are currently on 4.
