Retirement looms large!

Post by Thermexman »

Just a head’s up folks. You might be hearing more from me soon! Oh no I hear you groan. Yep :D .

When I first joined this group, back in 2016, I worked 12 hr shifts and had lots of time just sat monitoring equipment and alarms. That gave me masses of time to kill, especially when work was quiet.
Like a fireman without any fires, we were a necessity but it was wasteful, just having us sitting there, when nothing was happening.

In 2018 we had a lot of investment into automation and new technologies. This gave us mobile tablets that allowed us to monitor and control equipment from anywhere, on our rather large plant.

Our Boilerhouse role (we were tied to local control panels/control room and couldn’t stray from the area) evolved into a roving, site wide Utilities role. This was very interesting but was also a very steep learning curve! Stressful too! It also allowed the company to reduce our numbers down from five, to two and took us off the “quiet” nightshift. We now work days only but are on call out of hours.

This added hugely to our workload as we took on extra responsibilities and squeezed them into an 8.5hr day!
Hence, I had zero time during work hours, to sit at a desk!

Well, after achieving my 40yr service award on 20th May, I only went and handed in my notice yesterday!
With accrued holidays to use up, I will cease to be a Thermex Boilerman (old title) slash, Utilities Technician on 19th June.

I’ve been training my replacement since last September and have been surplus to requirements for a few weeks now!

As I type this, I thought I’d feel exited? I’m a bit numb if I’m honest. Anyway, it’s done now. The email’s been sent!

I’m hoping to spend a bit more time on here. Might be dangerous for the old watch collector in me, as I’ve been off the habit for a couple of years.

Gonna hang on proudly to my alias of Thermexman though! I’ve earned that title over the last 20yrs of my career.

See more of you around I hope.

Yes, I can still waffle. :D

Quite normal, I think. it’s a big step, an important rite of passage in any person’s life. Mixed emotions are to be expected.

You’ll get lots of advice about keeping busy. Don’t worry too much about finding things to do, they will find you. Even after several years I go in and help occasionally, which goes a little way towards the travel fund.

One of the joys is being able to cut the grass on a Monday morning, sit in the garden on Tuesday afternoon, going to town on the bus on Wednesday to have a nice lunch and do some shopping, and so on. You can even change the days.

You can also treat yourself. Employers tend not to rock up with the gold watch these days, but you might find something to commemorate the occasion. I made a promise to myself that I would go to the Greek Islands in September when all the kiddies were in school, first holiday ever in school term time. I had to defer it by a year because of Covid, but it was absolutely magical. I can heartily recommend a fly and flop holiday to celebrate your retirement. 8)

Thanks guys. Some good advice there Steve.
Got a week in Bowness and a week in Italy booked already.

I have a load of things to do around the house, like decorating and de-cluttering. Especially the garage and both kids rooms. They might have left, yet their respective rooms are fuller than when they lived here?
I’ve told them I’m buying bin bags and they’ll be getting the call to collect what’s theirs!

My usual modus operandi is to blitz through all the tasks as quickly as possible as I’m a completer finisher, according to the three times I was forced to take the Belbin test for my job!

Just sat here now and the penny is beginning to drop……..there’s no rush! I’ve got all the time in the world to complete this! 😀

Congratulations Steve.

We still haven’t bothered competing all of the house task lists and I packed in work almost ten years ago.

There is a lot to be said for doing what you want, when you want…😀

Congratulations!!

Take a couple days to reflect on those first days off plus buy a watch. Then a couple days to decide which of those projects you want to tackle first. Then start off with the projects.

Life will then decide what comes your way to fill the time productively and annoyingly.

I am much busier now, being retired, then when I was working full time. I don't know how I ever found time to work. The difference is I enjoy everything much more!

Congratulations on what sounds like a well-earned retirement! Retiring was the best thing I’ve done in ages. Don’t be too bothered about a retirement plan. You’ll find your way and figure out how to keep yourself occupied. I spend my days holding down the fort at home while my wife still works. Daily chores only take up a sliver of my time, allowing plenty of time to do what I want. It’s the best!

Again, congratulations!
