Interesting point about cloud storage Alistair, hadn't seen that. I don't use it now and have no desire for the future.

More investigation needed.

I'm about to pick up a new lap top that comes with 7 Professional with an option to upgrade to 8 for free.

I will not be upgrading to 8 nor risking 10 until we know it's not another vista!

Just my uniformed personal thoughts.
Honestly, Vista was great. I really haven't had any problems ever with any MS update. I skipped 98ME and 7, but have owned (or gotten from MS) every OS since Windows 386. I actually was running Vista on my desktop when 7 came out, and only installed it onto my laptop, which I think I have turned on twice in five years. All my Surface tablets, my desktop and phone run 8.1.

If you don't want to keep seeing the upgrade notification in your system tray then just uninstall windows update KB3035583 just done it on my laptop.

Remember though you'll have to go into windows update and hide the offending update or it'll just download itself again.

Right click on the update - then click on 'Hide'

This is one reason why I don't have automatic updates enabled, I have mine set to tell me when updates are available so I can see what is going to be downloaded/installed.

Chris.

Looking around for info on costs of Win10 I found this on PCGamer's website;-

"ss event today, Microsoft announced that Windows 10 will be a free upgrade for Windows 7 and Windows 8 users during its first year of availability. There was some confusion, however, when Microsoft's Terry Myerson started talking about Windows 10 "as a service." Did that mean that after that first year of free availability, Windows 10 would cost an annual fee? I asked Myerson for clarification after the presentation, and he confirmed that there will be no additional fees attached to Windows 10, whenever you buy it.

Myerson clarified that Windows 10 users will still get free updates and support for the lifetime of the OS, exactly like past versions of Windows (like XP and Windows 7's Service Packs, for example). There's no subscription model for updates or support or continuing to use the OS. Myerson's reference to Windows "as a service" simply meant that Microsoft plans to update the OS with smaller, more regular updates rather than the big, chunky updates of past Service Packs.

A year after Windows 10 is first available, it will no longer be a free upgrade for Windows 7 and 8 users. Microsoft will then sell Windows 10 the same way it has sold past versions of Windows. MS hasn't set a specific price yet, but Myerson said the price will likely be comparable to past versions of Windows. Windows 8 costs $120 on Amazon, for instance.

Update: It seems there's still confusion. It is very clear from this post that for the first year it's available, you can upgrade to Windows 10 for free if you have Windows 7 or 8. You will not pay for it. After that year is up, nothing will happen to your Windows 10 license. If you do not upgrade within that year, however, you will have to pay for an upgrade. The offer expires after a year, not the upgrade."

Some more info from PC Advisor;-

Update, 1 June 2015: Microsoft today announced that Windows 10 will be available beginning July 29 in 190 markets around the world. Customers with PCs and laptops running Windows 7 and Windows 8 will be able to get Windows 10 as a free upgrade. Consumers will have one year from July 29 to take advantage of the free upgrade.

Once a Windows device is upgraded to Windows 10, Microsoft will continue to keep it current for the supported lifetime of the device—at no cost. Those who want to be among the first in line for the free Windows 10 upgrade can reserve a free copy in the coming weeks.

Windows 10 will be free to end users. At least it will be a free upgrade. Users of Windows 7, Windows 8, and Windows Phone will be able to upgrade to Windows 10 on their devices, for free. This is guaranteed for the first year of the new OS's shelf life, but we would be surprised if it didn't remain free - depending on uptake.

I also picked up that MS support for Windows 7 technically finished in January this year, although MS is still issuing updates.

Overall, I gain the impression that MS is looking at getting as many users onto Win10 as quickly and as painlessly as possible. Quite a good idea; I might try it.

I'm slightly embarrassed to say that I am still on Vista at home. It looks like I will have to pay to upgrade to Windows 10. Unless I install Windows 7 first (I bought a disk off Amazon), but that's a faff. Perhaps I'll just buy a new PC after Windows 10 is out. Or an iMac! :)

Had an iMac. Nice computer. Great for browsing the web. Completely useless for productivity if you're used to Windows and especially Office programs. (office for mac != office for windows). Your comment was tongue in cheek, but before anyone invests in a mac product, determine if the apps you rely on have OSx counterparts. Unless its an adobe app, it probably doesn't. Using bootcamp or parallels is not a solution for productively using Windows on OSx.

I think that Office 365 is a better match between Mac / PC - certinaly no issues with clients who have the Mac versions and our using the PC versions...

I think that MS are recognising that the OS is not necessarily their future income stream - but having people using their OS gives them access to make money in other ways... so a free for life model could be a clever move in a world where Apple have become very much more powerful despite having a minority of the desktop / laptop market...

According to Microsoft:

So, officially, the mainstream support for W7 is already over - although they are still providing updates.

Thanks for that sir. So i am out of mainstream support already. This free upgrade is sounding more tempting by the minute

I bought my first computer in 2002 but only got the the Internet in 2007 when I was dragged screaming to it by outside pressure. Prior to that I just used the spreadsheets and browsed my copy of the Encarta if I wanted to look something up.

My Dell desktop ran XP.

My first laptop (Toshiba) ran Vista and passed latterly to my wife.

My current HP laptop runs Windows 8.1.

I have been happy with all of them and suppose the same would be true of Windows 10.

There are times however when I wonder if my life has truly been enriched by home computers.
