At one point, his grandfather gave him an old watch of his that he (my step-son, that is) wore pretty consistently. I don’t know if it was from a desire to wear a watch, or the novelty of this new thing, or because it was from his grandfather. I’m not even sure if the time was ever set correctly or if he knows how to tell time on an analog watch.

At some point, he stopped wearing it. I think the strap (it was a Velcro type) might have broke.
I think you need to “step” in here, stepfather! Remember you’re a womble teacher, your life’s mission is to educate.

My focus right now is on trying to convince my son to let me buy him a proper watch for graduation from university! The money I’m prepared to spend would put the nicest watch in the family on his wrist, but alas, he has zero interest.

^^ Since the money must be spent, you should spend the money on a watch for yourself and show him what he missed out on.

There's a re-working of that Patek Phillipe line here! Something like:

"You never actually own a Christopher Ward, you're merely looking after it for your younger generation (until they develop an interest in watches and then they'll have to wrestle it off your wrist)." Something like that!

Buy that watch and keep it safe ready for the right moment!
