POLL: I bought a vintage Yema - will it suck?

Post by NationOfLaws »

Weeks ago I bought myself a little birthday gift and picked up this vintage Yema chronograph from eBay. I have no idea why.

The listing was written completely in Italian so I am relying on Google Translate to tell me that this is a running chronograph in good condition but with no service record. It also apparently has no spring bars or straps, which is fine since I have both.

Here's my question for all of you: given my track record of eBay purchases going awry, what are the chances that this watch a) arrives, b) arrives in working condition, and c) arrives in working condition and is something I actually want to wear?

NB - this post is for fun. I'm looking forward to sharing the outcome once it arrives... allegedly tomorrow.

Do you know what the movement is and what the case measurements are?

That’s absolutely lovely, and not what i thought a vintage Yema was going to look like. Current Yema company have a great back catalogue to take inspiration from.
I voted that everything will be fine. Though that’s what I thought the last time...

It's a Valjoux 7765, allegedly. Looks like about 36mm wide, not including the crown, and a lug-to-lug of about 42.5mm. 18mm strap.

Well it certainly looks delightful and I agree that case diameter will be suitably vintage. Can't wait for the back-off photos.

Seems like it has a display caseback? From the listing:

That's a cool find. Very different to the usual dive watches we see from Yema.

Fingers crossed for you.

Hi,

I don't think this watch would work. With a closer look at this lever :
Capture d’écran 2023-09-13 103439.png
It doesn't have the same hue as the other pieces so , my guess is this piece is not properly fixed. It looks to me like a keyless lever and I can guess a spring in the picture, to the left of the "17 jewels" writing
I'm sorry to be the bad guy here but I hope I'm mistaken.

Fancy though

Sorry, I voted you’d be underwhelmed! (Though I hope I’m wrong!) Did these originally have see through casebacks? I think I’ve seen one before on a sales website and it was a solid case back…

I chose everything will be great, only because you didn’t include my option.

I thought the display case back seemed suspect but a couple other listings I saw had them as well.

Update!

Good news and bad news. Good news is: the watch has arrived (sandwiched between two DVDs and wrapped in bubble wrap. Did I think I was scammed at first? Yes I did). The watch runs! It’s in generally good shape.

The bad: I thought the lugs were 18mm. They are not. They are 16mm. I have no 16mm straps, so I need to order one. Wrist check will have to wait.

In the meantime, here is a photo of the watch resting atop the 18mm strap I bought for it.
