I understand that in 2005 over 100,000 turned up during the week.

Are we talking Rockabilly a la Stray Cats?

Ten minutes rummaging around in a box I recently found whilst trying to de clutter a couple of rooms.

The Summer Jamboree is a festival of 40s/50s American music. So yes, some Rockabilly (The Stray Cats actually played the festival in 2008) but all kinds of rock n roll and blues based music.

The band I was in at the time was a jump blues band called the Big Heat. Jump blues is a niche musical style. It emerged in post war America when it wasn’t financially viable to take the 1930s big bands out on the road. They typically had around 8-10 members, guitar, bass, drums, piano and a small horn section. It was effectively the missing link between big band music and the emergence of small rock n roll groups in the early 50s.

The festival took over the whole town for about a week. The first few days were just the odd gig around town but things really got going on the Thursday with a night with around 6-7 bands playing at a venue just outside town. The main stage, which is where we played, took place on the Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights, 3 bands per night.

As per numbers, the whole festival was free so anyone could just walk up and see the bands so I don’t know how they would have counted how many entered. But 100,000 is impressive and my retelling of this tale may just have got a new fact.

Here’s the festival website.

Dick Whittington's cat is a cracker.

I remember the 70s flared jeans so well.

Are you the angler?

PS I can't believe it won't let me type Dick (Richard).

Iain

Sounds like the Festival is great fun.

I love The Stray Cats.

I got my information from here but of course I take your point about counting.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Summer_Jamboree

In 2005 the festival attracted around 100,000 people during the seven days of the event and the three days of the prefestival; the final evening was attended by 40,000 people.

I love this thread: school pics, gigs, tours of duty, sports, cars, motorbikes, hobbies, travel, jobs and a little mayhem. What an interesting and eclectic mix with such interesting (and in many cases impressiv) lives and histories. Keep adding please.. 👍

I agree 100%! It’s revealing a more personal side to members that we don’t normally see. On the flip side, it’s also making me feel sadly depressed about my rather unadventurous life compared to some!

My step daughter-in-law Amy backstage with Bananarama in November 2017.

Her uncle's sister is Keren Woodward (on the left).

This could go here, or it could also go in the ‘pics from the walkers thread’ but as it’s from 2013, I’ll put it here.

These are from the Allendale Challenge, a 26 mile long distance challenge walk across the Northumberland moors to raise money for the local mountain rescue. It’s considered to be quite a tough walk and the snow the year I did it certainly added another challenge.

I did the walk with my mate Geordie and his mate Big Dave. Here’s here’s a photo of me and Geordie at one of the summits about half way round

Big Dave obviously gets his nickname for a reason and Geordie is also 6 foot 7. Here’s a photo of us at the finish line, I promise there are no weird filters, I’m not standing in a hole and I am 5 foot 10.

Neil

They had just come off stage in Cardiff hence the splotchy eye make from Sara and Siobhan.

I've never mentioned it to Amy but like any red blooded male I always had a thing about Bananarama.

Iain

Crikey. Big Dave's big.

Brilliant photographs.

We just need missF to repost some of her 2002 British Antarctic Survey photographs and we'll be well away.
