Phone Help Required If Possible

Post by scooter »

I have a 4 year old HTC Wildfire which is on Vodafone Pay As You Go.

If I bought another smartphone which was 'unlocked', does that mean that I could simply put my sim card in it and carry on exactly as I am?

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

If the phone is SIM free or unlocked that means that you can put any SIM into it.

One thing to be aware is that SIMs are now different sizes. There is the standard SIM, a Micro SIM and a Nano SIM. Whichever one you chose you may need to get a new SIM from your provider who should provide it free. O2 did for me.

Many thanks Ian.

That certainly answers my question and a little more.

Good advice!
The only thing I can add is that if you're looking at moving networks, have a look at GiffGaff https://giffgaff.com/

Awesome performance, excellent deals, and they run on the O2 network so coverage is excellent. The only network that covers rural Devon!

Thanks for your post Richard.

To be honest I only make 1 or 2 calls per month and a £10 monthly Vodafone Freebie gives me unlimited texts and all the Web access I need.

I am aware of giffgaff though and have heard good reviews.

Also ensure your contacts etc are saved to Google. Your new phone will give you the option of installing any purchased apps on first use, plus sync contacts etc

If all this while you've been able to access all your contacts/address book while on Gmail on your computer's (not phone) web browser, then your contacts should already be synced to the Google servers. If so, they will be automatically synced to your new phone once you enter in your Gmail address and password, assuming your new phone also runs Android.

If not, you'll have to transfer or copy over the SIM contacts to Google's contacts book.

You can do this manually, entry by entry, while on your phone. Alternatively, perhaps the phone shop could copy over all the data on your old SIM card to your new SIM card? That way you could just use the new SIM card with the copied contacts in your new phone and transfer the SIM contacts over to Google contacts at your convenience.

Your Wildfire camera pics and music, if any, will be stored in the SD card. A fair number of new Android phones no longer have an SD card slot - having large internal storage instead - so you might want to check on that. Some people prefer having the option of removable storage. In any case, remember to remove your SD card and back it up on your computer, if you're trading in your Wildfire.

Ask one simple question and it turns into a support forum on phone changing and a survey of who has the best deals.

750 minutes a month may be overkill unless Scooter talks for a very, very long time on each of his 2 calls. I can just imagine him calling someone and saying "Hi, have you 5 hours to spare?".

Hmmm...Tesco.... Wouldn't give them my money, I avoid stepping in their stores.

Sorry but I like to think about where my money's going, and Tesco don't score well on many issues...

Fair Trade
UK Farmer support
The list goes on......
